New Year, New Goals

Start the new year off on the right foot. Choose healthy diet choices and lifestyle changes that will help you thrive this year. Try cutting down on sugar, as it can cause all sorts of problems that may hold you back from achieving your goals. Think about the carbs you consume. Are they fueling you the best they can? A few non-food related switches that will change your life include making sure you are getting enough rest and sunshine. Sleep sets the tone for our whole day. Be sure to prioritize a good night's rest. During the day, go outside and get some sun. Getting enough sunshine is more important than ever with so many of us working and spending more time all together at home. Why not kick off your shoes and wiggle your feet around in the grass. You may find direct contact with the earth will boost your serotonin levels.

If you are looking for an idea to set this new year in motion, this month just so happens to be Whole30 January. This month's Whole30 challenge is a great guideline to start this year by improving your health. Whole30 focuses on real food such as meats, healthy fats, and vegetables while eliminating added sugars, alcohol, and dairy. This may be different than your regular diet, but that's what a challenge is! To help you get started, we have made all items in our Whole30-Approved category 15% off. Whatever your goals are this year, we wish you the best of luck!

Product Feature | Don't Overlook Lamb Meat

Like other meats, lamb is an excellent source of nutritionally complete protein, providing all eight essential amino acids in the right ratios. Lamb meat also has fewer calories, more cancer-fighting CLA, more omega-3s, and less saturated fat than beef. Even with these facts, Americans eat less than one pound of lamb per person per year. Don't overlook this fantastic source of protein on your next shopping trip. You can learn more about lamb on the Discover Blog.

Out of stock Lamb products will be restocked the week of 1/18.

Category Sale | Save 15% On Whole30 Favorites

Sacred Cow Film | Available For Viewing

Many of you may remember we featured the film Sacred Cow in our newsletter. Sacred Cow "probes the fundamental moral, environmental, and nutritional quandaries we face in raising and eating animals." The film walks through present-day, popular misconceptions surrounding the meat industry and the environment. Beginning January 5, you can stream Sacred Cow in the US on iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, Amazon, DirecTV, Dish Network, and In Demand.

Shout Out | Mediterranean Meatballs and Pemmican

Patron @slowfoodventure shared a fat-fueled meal of Mediterranean Meatballs and Pemmican. The meatballs had an added layer of flavor and healthy fat by allowing the Pemmican to melt over the top. If you need a quick meal, this method could work great with our Pre-Cooked Adobo Seasoned Beef Meatballs. Just heat and serve!

Diet Modifications May Help Reduce Cognitive Decline, Study Suggests

The foods we eat may have a direct impact on our cognitive acuity in our later years. This is the key finding of an Iowa State University research study spotlighted in an article published in the November 2020 issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

The study was spearheaded by principal investigator, Auriel Willette, an assistant professor in Food Science and Human Nutrition, and Brandon Klinedinst, a Neuroscience PhD candidate working in the Food Science and Human Nutrition department at Iowa State. The study is a first-of-its-kind large scale analysis that connects specific foods to later-in-life cognitive acuity.

Pork Shoulder Roast

"Amazing flavor!"

"This roast is DELICIOUS, with an amazing flavor and cooks up juicy and tender. My only complaint is that it's so good, the two of us can finish it off rather quickly! Definitely will purchase it again."

Crock Pot Kalua Pig

By Russ Crandall | The Domestic Man

Kalua pig is one of Hawaii’s best-known dishes, and easily replicated at home. Traditionally, an entire pig is placed in an underground pit (“imu” in Hawaiian) that is lined with hot rocks and wrapped in banana leaves, then covered with a layer of soil and roasted overnight. Since we don’t have room in our back yard for an imu, nor access to a suckling pig and banana leaves, nor the desire to go through such a hassle, we just use a crock pot or french oven.

Our thanks to Russ Crandall for sharing this very delicious recipe. For more of Russ's recipes, check out his food blog, The Domestic Man.

grass fed beef steaks

Missouri cows and calves enjoying last dry days of December before New Years Eve snow and ice covered this landscape a few days later. Mother Nature always bats last and after centuries cattle have learned to adapt to the environment they are raised in. 20 to 60 degrees is an ideal temperature range for their body heat management. Temperatures outside this range require more effort to heat and cool. Below ground soil critters have similar adaptation habits for the seasons of the year. As soils cool off, they go deeper into Mother Earth. Soil cover like this pasture creates fewer temperature swings. Surprisingly very important in the heat of the summer. Happy New Year to soils, livestock, and the much appreciated US Wellness Customer base.
