Summer Sun Brings Abundance

Summer is here! That means a couple of important things to us - Peak growing season for prairie grasses and cattle. Cattle love this time of year because their absolute favorite foods are available in abundance all around them. With each paddock rotation, they enjoy the best grazing with thriving native prairie grasses on our multigenerational family farms. Summer rains and sunshine bring excellent growing conditions for these grasses, with water seeping deep into the earth, nurturing the microorganisms and plant roots underground. These grasses capture atmospheric carbon and pull it into the soil at a rate comparable to forested areas. Our pastures are like big carbon vacuum cleaners taking carbon from the atmosphere and drawing it deep into the ground where microbes use their incredible talents to turn it into energy for plants. In turn, plants repeat the process, and the cycle repeats over and over again. While you may only notice cows in a pasture at first glance, there is much more at work. From the cows, insects, birds, and plant varieties, nature works together to create a thriving ecosystem as it has for millenniums. By returning to our roots and letting nature lead the way, we heal soil quality with each grazing rotation while delivering the finest quality grass-fed meats to your door with transparency as if you raised the animals yourself. The grazing mob has just entered a new block of grass. Please note the left hand side of the picture is where they spent the previous 24 hours. Based on the height of the forage, this group of cattle is consuming half and leaving the other half placed close to the soil surface to feed the billions of miniature soil microrganisms below ground that are building soil tilth and sucking up tons of atmospheric carbon. In turn these are producing far more grass than they were 24 years ago when this farm started the conversion from monoculture agriculture to grass based land management which is creating soil every day of the year with live roots to work with.
