During all of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it's always good to remember to tune in and listen closely to your body. Yes, there is a lot to do, especially if you'll be preparing a meal for extended family and friends. It's so easy to over-do it, though. Stress is a very real thing we all face and at different times in varying degrees. Some people seem to handle stress more gracefully, but it's still there lurking behind the scenes whether it's admitted or not.
Stress is something that can affect our well-being without us realizing what's going on. Here are a few things to watch for: higher than normal blood pressure, headaches, chest tightness or pain, trouble sleeping, anxiety, lack of focus, irritability, fatigue, shortness of breath, upset stomach, tension, etc. If you notice these symptoms cropping up over the next few weeks, give yourself a break. Even if it's just an afternoon off the normal routine, it can help us cope with the holidays easier.
We have a few thoughts to hopefully help manage stress a little better this year.
1. Make a plan. Try not to procrastinate. Even if it takes a few minutes, the time spent planning the upcoming weeks can help your mind deal with the stress. 2. There might be some late nights but try to keep them at a minimum. Stick as closely to your normal sleep routines as possible. Exercise during the day can help you sleep better at night. Eliminate screen time earlier, read a book, or take a walk. Try a good chamomile herbal tea before bedtime. 3. Reduce caffeine drinks like coffee and teas throughout the day. Avoid overdoing it on alcohol. 4. Watch one of your favorite comedies. It's been said that laughter is the best medicine and studies show this to be true. Laughing helps to lighten our mood and relieves stress. 5. Prayer and meditation can do wonders for our souls. If you're not into that, then just make sure you have some quiet time during the day or evening hours to quiet your mind.
The holidays are a joyful time of year. A little bit of effort can help us reclaim that joy in the midst of some stressful days.
