COLD WEATHER NUTRITION...
Good nutrition matters all year long, but it takes on extra importance when the holidays roll around. Between the hustle of shopping, family gatherings, and winter festivities, we’re also staring down the start of cold and flu season. It always seems to show up at the worst possible time. With so much going on, it’s easy to let healthy habits slide, but this is exactly when we need to be more mindful. A little extra care now can help us enjoy the season with less stress and fewer sniffles.
Building strong nutrition habits doesn’t happen overnight, but once you start, the benefits are hard to ignore. Eating clean, wholesome foods not only boosts energy but also strengthens the immune system. That means fewer sick days and quicker recovery if illness does strike. While we can’t guarantee we’ll dodge every bug, a healthy gut and balanced diet go a long way toward keeping us resilient through the ups and downs of winter.
Certain foods are especially helpful this time of year. Organ meats and homemade bone broths, made from the carcass of whole pastured chickens and turkeys, or the bones from grass-fed animals are exceptionally gut healthy. Fermented favorites like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kombucha pack a powerful punch for the immune system. And if you do feel under the weather, a few tried-and-true remedies can make a difference. Grandma’s chicken soup isn’t just comfort food — it’s anti-inflammatory. Garlic brings natural antibacterial and antiviral properties. Citrus fruits and berries deliver Vitamin C and antioxidants to help fight off symptoms. And don’t forget hydration — water keeps the body flushed and balanced.
The holidays are meant to be enjoyed, and good nutrition is one of the best ways to make sure we can do just that. By choosing foods that support our health, we give ourselves the gift of energy, resilience, and peace of mind. Pair that with a little common sense — rest, moderation, and listening to your body — and you’ll be better prepared to handle both the joys and the challenges of the season.
Well Wishes, Team USWM
