A Bold Declaration...

As Americans celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it is worth considering what that moment truly meant. This was more than lofty words. This was a bold declaration that ordinary people were willing to risk everything for something greater. In 1776, a small group of determined Americans stood up to a powerful and distant king, fully aware of the dangers they faced. They understood the cost of defiance could be their lives, their fortunes, and their future, yet they pressed forward with a shared conviction that liberty was worth the risk. That courage helped shape a nation grounded in the belief that all people are created equal and endowed with the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

That pioneering spirit did not end with independence from England. It pushed westward across mountains, plains, and open wilderness. Generations of settlers left behind the known comforts of the East and journeyed into rugged, unfamiliar territory in search of opportunity and a fresh start. The path was rarely easy. Families faced harsh terrain, unpredictable weather, disease, and the constant uncertainty of what lay ahead. In many cases, the journey itself was dangerous, with long wagon trails stretching across the continent where survival was never guaranteed. Yet time and again, these pioneers pressed forward, driven by a belief that freedom and land ownership offered a better future.

Once they arrived, the real work began. These early Americans had to learn how to raise animals, grow crops, and build homes in places that did not yet resemble anything familiar. Survival often meant adapting quickly, hunting before planting, and figuring out how to live off the land in ways they had never imagined. It required resilience, creativity, and a willingness to try, fail, and try again. This spirit of independence, hard work, and faith in the future became part of the American identity, shaping not only farms and towns, but the very character of the nation itself.

It may feel like a long time ago, but that same DNA still runs strong today. Will this same spirit take us even further to the frontiers of space and another planet? The desire for freedom, the courage to build something meaningful, and the hope of leaving a better world for the next generation continue to guide us. As we honor this milestone, we are reminded of the words of George Washington in his Farewell Address to the nation: “Liberty has a price. You have in a common cause fought and triumphed together; the independence and liberty you possess are the work of joint counsels, and joint efforts of common dangers, sufferings, and successes.”

Missouri's Native Prairie

Missouri's Native Prairie

"“Time travel back to the late 1700's in Lewis County Missouri and replace the grass fed beef cattle with North American bison and this image would be a near perfect match of native mixed species prairie. This tract of land has been in forage since 1992 and it shows elegant Eastern Gamma Grass with roots going down ten feet and massive above ground growth as tall as the cattle. Long live the soil and our learned skills to regenerate the biomass in the top four inches of the soil surface which is the life blood of the planet.“
