FDA Approves Cloned Animals in Food Supply

January 27, 2008

Dear John,

It's the middle of winter and many of us are sniffling,
sneezing, and coughing, as well as dealing with fevers and aches. While many of you swear next year you will get a flu shot because you are convinced that will prevent you from getting sick, think again. Preliminary results indicate you'll get just as sick (with colds, flu, flu-like illnesses) if you got the vaccine than if you didn't. Why doesn't the vaccine work?

Our good friend Dr. Mercola would advocate smart nutrition is better medicine at keeping the doctor away versus a vaccine with heavy metal potential.

There is no single virus that causes the flu; there is no one flu vaccine that protects against all of them. A flu vaccine is designed to confer immunity against the strains of flu virus that are expected to be most common and most serious. The vaccine is a sort of one-size-fits-all solution, even though there are more types of flu than covered by the vaccine and the flu types vary according to region.

You may not even get protection against the intended virus. Why? First, because viruses change over time. The piece that was in the vaccine may not 'look' the same (chemically) as the real thing (months later, after all!). Second, the vaccine may not have given you enough stimulation to fight off the disease.

Among reports that this year's flu season started out earlier and was harsher than normal, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that this year's flu vaccine had "no or low effectiveness" against influenza or influenza-like illness. Depending on how the data was analyzed, the vaccine protected from zero percent to 14 percent of study participants. People are dying from the flu not because they didn't get their annual flu shot, but because they are already sick and have compromised immune systems. Therefore, the ultimate treatment for the flu is straightforward proactive prevention.

Catherine's article below has effective means to help you fight off colds, flu, other viruses and bacteria, and even help you fight off cancer. The best means to stay healthy and avoid becoming ill is to eat healthy, consider smart nutraceuticals and practice healthy lifestyle habits. Not only will you be better able to fight off the flu, your body will be healthier overall, so you will be better able to avoid heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and a myriad of other diseases caused by a breakdown in the immune system.

We are here to help you become a healthier person and to that end you will avoid common ills that plague others.

Warmest January regards,

John, Lee Ann, Megan and Lacey

FDA Says Cloned Meat Is Safe To Eat, But Do You Really Want to Eat It?
cattle grazing on grass
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced as of January 15, 2008 that meat and milk from cloned cattle, pigs and goats, and their offspring, is as safe to eat as meat from non-cloned animals.

The FDA has come to this view following years of detailed analysis and study. The announcement only covers cattle, swine and goats because the agency said there was not enough information on clones from other animals such as sheep, for it to reach a view one way or the other.

The agency has published three documents outlining its approach to the regulation of animal cloning. These are a risk assessment, risk management plan, and industry guidance.

At present the industry is under a self imposed moratorium, in place since 2001, to give the FDA time to conduct its evaluation. Now this announcement has been made, the next step will be for the US Department of Agriculture to convene stakeholders and agree a smooth transition toward putting cloned meat on the market.

The agency said it will not be requiring producers to show the fact that meat is from cloned animals on labels and packaging, because, they said, food from cloned cattle, pigs and goats is no different from that of conventionally reared animals.

sking imageWinter Sports Require Energy

Aspen, Colorado is reporting the most snow ever recorded since record keeping began in 1930. Over 14 feet has fallen on the surrounding mountains with another major storm striking the West coast as this edition goes to press.

Skiing requires calories for warmth and endurance.  U.S. Wellness pemmican bars and pails will run slalom poles around the highly touted energy bars you will discover in mountain lodges.  Pemmican bars weigh 3.2 ounces and deliver 16 grams or protein and 330 calories without high fructose corn syrup and a myriad of other murky ingredients you will discover on the long winded labels.

Pemmican was the mainstay for the Plains Indians who survived with excellent nutrition and none of the creature comforts we are spoiled with today.

U.S. Wellness would like to salute the Aspen youth ski teams as these youngsters will be our future alpine world cup skiers.

We have a mutual friend with a young GS J-5 racer in house who loves the rigors of the super competitive environment.  It is hard to believe the speeds these kids achieve at such young ages.  Last week there was a Giant Slalom competition on Buttermilk Mountain with plenty of air and speed on some of the best snow old timers can remember.

Two more years until the Winter Olympic flame is lit which will unveil a new crop of world class winter athletes.

Prevent The Flu This Winter!

Dire media predictions of pandemic-proportion flu, along with the usual hype about the flu vaccine and possible shortages can cause even the healthiest of us to panic. What the media does not tell us is that we don't all HAVE to have the flu vaccine, and catching the flu is not something that is inevitable. By following some healthy guidelines, you and your family can totally avoid colds and flu, strengthen your immune system and promote overall better health.

Why do we get more colds and flu in the winter? It's not the cold or wet weather, it's the fact that more of us spend more time in confined places--where others cough and sneeze and where we touch objects that others have touched and contaminated.

The cornerstones of conventional medical flu treatment are fever control, rest and plenty of fluids. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Tempra, Datril) or ibuprofen (Advil, Nuprin, Motrin) are used to reduce fever and achiness.

However, excessive amounts of acetaminophen can cause liver damage, and it definitely should not ever be taken with alcohol, as this increases the chance of harming the liver.

Ibuprofen has been connected to high blood pressure problems due to its effect on the kidneys, which in turn affect the blood pressure. There are over 200 different cold and flu products that contain these pain relievers, so do not try to mix cold/flu relief products, as you may be double-dosing yourself with harmful drugs or causing drug interactions.

Many people run to their physician for prescription antibiotics--which are usually worthless--as colds and flu are caused by viruses, not bacterial infections. Some health practitioners use amantadine (Symmetrel) as an antiviral drug. Many are being referred to use FluMist, a nasal type of vaccine. The side effects of FluMist--cough, runny nose/nasal congestion, irritability, headaches, chills, muscle aches and fever, sound just like the symptoms of the flu.

Flu vaccines are a guessing game.

ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH VIT. B12?

A recent study revealed that the risk of developing Alzheimer's among individuals who get enough antioxidants in their diet (including B vitamins) was 33% lower than those who didn't.

B12 is probably the most important member of the B vitamin family, in part because most adults simply don't get enough of it. It's actually the most chemically complex of all vitamins, with a molecular structure so intricate that only microorganisms can synthesize it.

Here are just a few of its critical functions:
·    Insures normal brain and nervous system functioning
·    Plays a crucial role in blood formation
·    Helps the body digest key substances and aids in     metabolism

As you can see, it's especially vital to optimal health. So vital that Vitamin B12 deficiency can actually cause severe and irreversible damage, especially to the brain and nervous system.

Here's the hitch: there are very few ways to get enough natural vitamin B12 into your diet. It doesn't occur in plants at all (vegetarians are at extreme risk of B12 deficiency for this reason). In fact, the only sources of B12 are animal products. And the best source of all is red meat - but not just any red meat.

Regular commercial beef doesn't have the same levels of B12, for the simple reason that modern animal husbandry methods produce unhealthy cattle. And unhealthy cattle yield nutrient-poor meat.

So if you want to get enough B12 (and you should!), grass-fed beef is one of the best ways to go.

DR. ERIC SERRANO M.D., M.S., B.C.
Eric Seranno Dear Dr. Serrano,

Most recommendations for daily Omega 3 supplementation I have read are
now suggesting 2-3 grams daily. If our family eats high omega 3 salmon twice monthly (from Vital Choice) and eats grass-fed beef or buffalo (1/4 lb serving per person) 3-5 times per week, will this eliminate some of the need for supplementation, and if so, how much supplementation will I need?

Thank you!

.........................................................................................................
Dear S.D.,

First of all, congratulations on your healthy diet and your food choices.  Although you have told me what your choices are for your protein intake, what about carbohydrates and other food intake?

I think that with your present intake of organic meats and fish you are safe to reduce your supplementation but I would still take fish oil supplements, due to that amount of research on fish oils and health. Since I do not know what type of other foods or fats you are eating, I do not know what kinds of ratios you have with regard to Omega-3's and Omega-6's. The important thing here is to realize that even though you may be getting an adequate supply of your Omega-3 fats through the salmon and grass-fed beef, if you are also getting a lot of Omega-6's from vegetable oils and trans fatty acids, then it would be important to continue with a higher intake of Omega 3's. So supplementing Omega-3's will not harm you even if you are getting an adequate amount in your diet.

Take Care!

Dr. Serrano

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE  SAYING
cheddar
Greetings!

Just wanted to let you know that my order on January 2nd was delivered by Fed Ex on Tuesday, January 8!  Wow!  Before noon!  I am thrilled with the ground lamb, lamb kabobs and the cheese.

Your cheese does not stuff me up!!

Imagine being able to eat cheese and love it. However,  because of the effect cheese has on me, I haven't eaten it in years.  Even the organic cheeses on the market cause me to have a stuffy head.  Which I can't afford if I want to be able to sing and have breath control and avoid a sore throat!!

The lamb is scrumptious, and smells so delicious as it cooks and tastes wonderful!.  I bought it for my Chihuahua, but am eating it also, and cannot thank you enough for both the excellence of quality and service.

That is all for now, will be calling in another order probably next week.

With many thanks, I absolutely thrilled to have found you, a safe and delicious source of meat, dairy and every good thing!

May you be richly blessed for tending the earth and it's creatures as the Lord God Almighty instructed mankind in Genesis!!

Cordially, grace and peace,

A. S.

$25  DISCOUNT FOR 40 LB. INCREMENTS

Do not forget to take advantage of the 40 pound $25 discount by ordering 40 pound combinations of beef, lamb, pork, butter, goat, shrimp and raw cheese.

This is our way of saying thank you for purchasing in volume. This can be any combination of products totaling 40 pounds and does not have to be specific to any category. Each 40 pound interval will yield the discount. For example, 80 pounds of product will yield a $50 discount and a 120 pound purchase will yield a $75 discount.

Important reminder:  If you are using a promo code for what ever reason, it will only work on orders under 40 pounds,  as the discount discussed above takes precedence on all order 40 pounds and up.

MINIMUM PURCHASE
Our new format enacted in April 2005 requires a $75 minimum purchase and a 7 pound minimum combined purchase of beef, lamb, pork, nutraceuticals, gourmet rabbit, soap, organic shrimp, grass-fed goat, grass-fed bison, raw cheese, organic snacks, laundry soap, condiments, single piece poultry, and butter.

The issue is the bulk chicken and ten pound cheese bundles originate from separate cold storage centers where those products are produced. It is not efficient to ship one package of beef as a stand alone item when the balance of the order originates 400 miles away.

The shopping cart will keep track and remind you if you are under the 7 pound limit for a combination of beef, lamb, pork, raw cheese, butter, goat, shrimp, soap, organic snacks, laundry soap and condiments purchases. Red font will appear under the shopping cart if you are under the minimum price or pound requirements.
