April 18, 2010   Monticello, Missouri
Dear John,
Grazing Cattle

Happy Earth Week! Earth day is this week, April 22 and we are doing our best here at US Wellness to help protect Mother Earth. All of our cattle graze on natural Missouri grasses without the use of pesticides or herbicides, which are harmful to other animals and are very dangerous when runoff contaminates water supplies. We use rotational grazing, meaning that the cattle are moved to a fresh paddock each night. This doesn't give them enough time to completely mow down a field, but merely eat about halfway down the grass stalks, which makes it easier for the grass to continue to grow.

Would you like to help protect the environment, and your family from harmful chemicals in regular detergents? Would you like to wash clothes in an all-natural laundry soap? Would you like to try our all-natural laundry soap nuts for FREE? There are 2 ways you can win - first go to our blog, and simply leave a comment. We love to hear customer feedback, and 15 lucky customers will win a free trial bag of soap nuts.  But don't wait, winners will be selected on Earth Day, April 22.

For another way to win: all during the month of April we are also giving away a free trial bag of soap nuts with every gift certificate purchase of $50.00 or higher. Gift certificates make great gifts (Don't forget about Mother's Day next month and wedding season!), we can mail the gift certificate and free bag of soap nuts directly to you or to the recipient. Visit our blog for more information, and to learn more about the benefits of soap nuts. If you've already tried the soap nuts and love them as much as we do, now is a great time to stock up because all 3 sizes are on sale this week!

CNN had an eye-opening story this week on the dangers of anti-bacterial products, see the video HERE. Most anti-bacterial products on the market today contain triclosan, which has been proven to affect the hormonal systems of animals. Keep your family safe by using our all-natural tallow soaps.

The Weston A. Price Foundation alerted us this week that the Senate is expected to vote on S. 510 very soon. We would like to encourage you once again to contact your Senators and let them know a one-size-fits-all approach to food regulation is not what our food system needs. We need to help protect the small farmers and producers that are selling local and direct to consumers and giving us the right to choose where our food is coming from.

We launched our Cold Pressed Olive Oil line this week with much success. It can be hard to find a pure olive oil source, we were lucky enough to stumble across this highly valued mixture of olive oil varieties that have been specialty imported from Europe. With seven different varieties and flavors, we can meet the needs of any taste palate!

Don't forget about the Fresh Chilled Meat deadline this Friday, April 23. Make sure to have your order in by 12:00 noon CST on Friday to ensure shipping on April 28, versus the next shipping date of May 26.

It's not too late to enter the Nourished Kitchen Clean Your Plate Recipe Challenge! All you have to do is post your favorite original grass-fed steak recipe and you are entered to win a free grass-fed London Broil from us! But don't delay, the contest ends this Friday, April 23 at noon!

The US Wellness team was well represented in St. Louis last weekend - Megan ran the Go! St. Louis half marathon and improved on her time from last year. Congratulations Megan!

Best April Regards,

John, LeeAnn, Megan, Tressa, and Jennifer on behalf of the farm families of US Wellness Meats.

Male Infertility Linked to a Lack of Omega 3 Fatty Acids

According to a University of Illinois study, omega-3 fatty acids may be good for more than heart health. One of the important components of Omega 3 may be very useful in treating male infertility.

"In our experiment, we used 'knockout' mice that lacked the gene responsible for an enzyme important in making docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a component of Omega 3 fatty acids. In the absence of DHA, male mice are basically infertile, producing few if any misshaped sperm that have no motility.

"We looked at sperm count, shape, and motility and tested the breeding success rate, and the mice lacking DHA simply were not able to breed," said Manuel Roqueta-Rivera, a U of I doctoral student who also worked on the study.

In the DHA-deficient knockout mice, sperm counts were extremely low. The sperm that were produced were round instead of elongated and they were unable to move well.

But, when DHA was introduced into the diet, fertility was completely restored. The difference was very striking. When the mice were fed DHA, all the sperm abnormalities were gone.

This is the first time that the importance of DHA to male fertility has been shown this directly, although some studies have suggested that male fertility patients with low sperm counts and less motile sperm tend to have low levels of this fatty acid.

The DHA study is part of a study to understand the function of the omega-3 and -6 fatty acids. As part of that work, this study developed a mouse model to help them understand a particular fat's physiological role. By knocking out genes, deficiencies can be created for the fats they are interested in to learn about their functions.

Our bodies must make DHA from dietary alpha-linolenic acids, the parent compound of the omega-3 fatty acid family. Grass-fed meats and wild caught fatty fish are good sources of this important fat.

Scientists say they are getting hints of the impact of this nutrient by looking at sperm in the DHA-deficient animals about what type of pathology they may be looking at and why these fatty acids are important. But this is the starting point in understanding the mechanisms that are involved, and more research is necessary to fully understand it.

Source:
The study was published in the February issue of the Journal of Lipid Research. Co-authors with Roqueta-Rivera and Nakamura are Chad K. Stroud, Wanda M. Haschek, Sandeep J. Akare, Mariangela Segre, and Rex A. Hess, all of the U of I, and Richard S. Brush, Martin-Paul Agbaga, and Robert E. Anderson, all of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Synthetic Female Hormones in Our Environment

Like it or not, we are in constant contact with hormone-disrupting chemicals in the foods we eat, the shampoos, lotions and soaps we use, hair products, makeup, drinking water, cookware, chewing gum, sunscreen, mouthwash, acne lotions, lawn pesticides and herbicides, household cleaners, and pharmaceutical products.

Some of these chemicals can mimic estrogen in the body, causing a dangerous hormonal imbalance in both men and women. These synthetic estrogen-like chemicals are called "Xenoestrogens" and can build up in our bodies, interfering with our own natural hormonal messages.

These synthetic chemical hormones are very difficult for the body to break down, and they actually amplify the effects of estrogen. These toxic substances can increase the estrogen load in the body over time, creating an "estrogen dominance" situation in some people. Individuals with any kind of estrogen dominance health condition should be especially vigilant to avoid xenoestrogens as much as possible.

Xenoestrogens are thought to be responsible for contributing to unnatural early puberty in girls, feminization in men, reduced fertility, reproductive problems, (in both sexes), and the overload of females hormones also increases the risk of breast and other reproductive cancers. Xenoestrogens are also responsible for weight gain, especially in the abdomen and in men, the chest.

Exposure of lab species and wild animals to xenoestrogens has been found to cause abnormalities in the reproductive systems of these animals. Xenoestrogens bind to estrogen receptors in both animals and humans including: reproductive tissue, body fat, and the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. Studies in mice show that xenoestrogens can cause progressive degeneration of testicular tissue and sexual dysfunction in both sexes.

Studies also show definite sexual and reproductive disturbances in wildlife, especially fish and marine life, from xenoestrogenic exposure. For example, the discharge from runoff and wastewater treatment plants release a large amount of xenoestrogens into streams, and dramatic changes have been documented and observed in the nearby aquatic life. Studies show that over 40% of male fish in these runoff areas also have been shown to be carrying eggs! This also ends up in our water supply as well.

Obviously, xenoestrogens sound like something we would want to avoid at all costs. But how, when they seem so ubiquitous? While it is difficult to totally avoid them, there are definite ways to reduce exposure to xenoestrogens. Let's take a look at where xenoestrogens are found...

This Is Your Brain on Margarine

By: Al Sears, MD

Dear Health-Conscious Reader,

There's now another reason to avoid margarine. It can make you stupid.

According to researchers at the University of Auckland, children who ate margarine every day had significantly lower IQ scores by the age of three-and-a-half than those who did not. Children who were underweight at birth had scores that were even lower by the time they were seven.

The tragedy here is that margarine was sold to us as a "healthier" alternative to butter. In fact, it may be the unhealthiest "food" ever created. You sure wouldn't know this by reading the labels. They have statements like "100% Natural" and "Mother Nature's Own" and "Heart Healthy" and the like all over them. But they are really nothing but chemical concoctions made in a laboratory.

The vegetable oils used in most margarine are hydrogenated to make them solid. This turns the oil into highly unhealthy trans-fatty acids. These man-made fatty acids have been shown to raise "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and lower "good" cholesterol (HDL). They have also been linked to inflammation, one of the major causes of heart disease.

I came across another gem of a study the other day. It's titled, "Margarine Intake and Subsequent Coronary Heart Disease in Men." This study is backed up by the world-famous Framingham Heart Study. They tracked people for 20 years and recorded the number of heart attacks suffered.
The results were eye-opening.

As margarine consumption increased, heart attacks went up. As butter consumption increased, heart attacks declined.
And that's not all...

During the second decade, the group eating the most margarine had 77% more heart attacks than the group eating none! Avoiding margarine may not only make you smarter, it could prevent you from having a heart attack or stroke.

Butter is a much healthier choice. But don't settle for just any type of butter. I recommend organic butter from grass-fed cows. It contains short- and medium-chain fatty acids, which are easily converted to energy. This means that the fat in butter is less likely to be stored as fat in your body. Plus, it's packed with vitamins and essential nutrients your body needs.

And here's a little tidbit you probably wouldn't know: Butter contains more vitamin A than carrots. It also contains vitamin E and selenium. These three nutrients help protect your heart from free radical damage.

To Your Good Health,

Al Sears, MD

shane ellison3 Supplement Dangers

By Shane "The People's Chemist" Ellison
www.thepeopleschemist.com

A snake bite can kill you fast.  Once bitten, it's only a matter of minutes before breathing becomes difficult.  Known to be "hemotoxic," venom attacks hemoglobin, which is responsible for carrying oxygen.  If not treated, suffocation sets in.  It's scary.  But, there's something else just as risky, and it's more common than a snake bite: tainted nutritional supplements.

Multivitamin Poisons Nervous System
One of the most common supplement contaminants appears to be lead. Lead poisoning attacks the central nervous system and causes permanent learning and behavior disorders.

In 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a study to uncover potential risks among supplements. Researchers concluded that the presence of lead was "far too common." The Vitamin Shoppe Multivitamin "Especially for Women" was tainted with 10 times the safe amount of lead. The company has since taken action and remedied the danger.

Children's Vitamin Causes Overdose
Overdosing is also a real and present danger. An independent analysis showed that a single dose of select products contained 180-270% more vitamin A than the daily limit set by the Institute of Medicine.(3)  One of the guilty parties was Hero Nutritionals, with their product "Yummi Bears," a supposed multivitamin for kids. Vitamin A overdose leads to include nausea, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, dizziness, and dry skin. Long term, it can cause bone and joint pain. Severe cases may result in liver damage. Clearly, not very yummi.

Cross Contamination
Another discovery hits hard. While most people are taking nutritional supplements to avoid prescription drugs, they are unknowingly exposing themselves every time they swallow a vitamin.

Big Pharma is the largest manufacturer and private label provider for nutritional supplements! As a result, cross contamination occurs. Nutrition Research Reviews reported that, "numerous non-hormonal nutritional supplements were found contaminated with non-labeled anabolic steroids." Other toxic contaminants found are the drugs known as diethylstilbestrol, indomethacin, and warfarin.

Products Void of Active Ingredients
Finally, most people are taking supplements that are void of the active ingredients. For my book, Over-The Counter Natural Cures, I tested the quality of two turmeric supplements (and many others). I was searching for the product with the highest amount of active ingredients, known technically as curcuminoids. One was essentially "pixie dust," and the other brimming with the lifesaving, anti-cancer compounds. Both were about $8 per month to use. Curmin-95 by Jarrow took the win big time! Those investing in competing products were not obtaining the maximum health benefits of the healing spice.

ThePeoplesChemist

Like hiking the desert fearful of snakes, supplement users should be weary of the products they swallow. Health never came from blindly swallowing pills, and it never will.

Eric Seranno
Dear Dr. Serrano,

Seven yeas ago through a nutritionist I found out my stomach does not produce enough acids to break down the food I eat prior to it entering my intestinal track. This was causing IBS problems.  I now take digestive supplements with meals to offset this deficiency which has worked wonderfully. These supplements include a hydrochloric acid tablet made from beets and a pancreatic enzyme tablet.  I also will occasionally take probiotics as I see the need. The healthy bacteria in my system seem to fall off over a period of time and they occasionally need a boost.

My question is what organs or body functions are supposed to create these digestive enzymes in my body to begin with? This seems to be the root cause of my problems and what might be the steps to help my body or the organs in question produce what it should to begin with.

Thanks,
R.P.
Wildwood, MO

Dear R.P.,

This is a very good question and also hard to answer without more details but I will do my best.

The three main organs producing digestive enzymes or juices are:

1. Stomach - Produces acid
2. Pancreas - Produces many, including pepsinogen
3. Liver - Produces the bile to digest fats by storing it in the gall bladder

I can add the mouth to this list because the salivary glands do produce some type of digestive material but that will be too technical. Now back to your question: why are you having this IBS?

It could be because you have food allergies, or you are not giving the body enough protein or raw materials for it to produce the enzymes. Or, you don't have the right bacteria to help your body handle what you are eating.

There are four supplements that I take everyday:

- Alpha Omega 3: I take four tablets twice a day, with two meals, and this gives me a combination of Omega 9, Omega 6, and Omega 3

- Pancreatic Enzymes

- Multivitamin from a food concentrate

- Probiotic.

The Alpha Omega 3 I created myself and you can get it from Scott at (614) 596-7994. The enzymes are prescription, but I also recommend the enzymes from Innate Response, and their vitamins are called Multi Food which I like a lot and take myself. By calling (800) 634 6342 and using code SER030 you can get them cheaper. You can also get probiotics from them called Flora 20/14.

I hope this help you and make sure you make changes in your diet so your digestive system is well supported.

Thank You,

Dr. Serrano

Need A Training Lift?
By: Scott Mendelson

Scott,

A friend of mine lost 20 lbs of fat in about a month using one of your diets and his Abs are amazing (magazine cover worthy).  You and I spoke about diet by phone and you were very helpful, but I wanted to ask you about ab training because obviously you know something that the rest of the world does not!

Ab Training for a Head Turning- Yet Functional Core!

Sally,

There are many misconceptions about core training and very rarely do I stumble on to a client that has a well designed strategy so I spend a lot of time implementing routines. Like any other muscle group the core must be stimulated and challenged to bring on improvements. I have come across literally thousands of people who have done crunches until the cows come home 5 days per week and have not achieved their goals. The right training strategy along with proper diet to lower body fat levels are keys to success. Remember you must work hard and smart to achieve rapid success. After all, if getting a great set of abs was easy, everyone would do it. Only a small percentage of trainees achieve a significant physique change and this is largely due to not having the right techniques in place based on the situation and goals.

All the Right Moves!
Assuming you have done thousands of crunches and sit ups in your life, let's explore some fresh stimuli to get a better response. An exercise ball provides countless exercise possibilities ranging from the simple to highly difficult, an anti burst ball is a great investment. The shape of the ball accommodates the natural curve of the back and can allow for a fuller range of motion vs. similar exercises done on the floor.

Fix Weak Links for a Great Six-Pack and Injury Prevention
Pending the client needs I will start them with a routine to build a base of core strength not only to improve looks, but also function. I start with the neglected areas which are almost always the obliques and lower portion of the abdominal wall. Fixing weak links is vital for development and injury prevention.  Most trainees focus on originating movements with the torso going upward which trains only a small portion of the core. Rotation movements help to recruit the obliques while leg lowering movements help to integrate lower back stability while also taxing core muscles.

Indirect Core Training for Accelerated Progress
I believe the core should only be trained 1 time every 5 to 7 days pending the recovery capacity of the client. Like any other musculature proper recovery is a crucial element to success. A lack of recovery in this area can lead to poor stabilization and injury. For my clients in a hurry to improve ab development I integrate exercises such as single arm standing db shoulder presses during upper training sessions to challenge core muscles. These types of movements are only appropriate when a strong base of core strength is in place without a history of injury. While these unilateral upper body sessions do not involve a single sit up- you will feel like you worked your core very hard the next day.

Exercise Progressions
As previously mentioned most trainees make use of a limited selection of exercises when training the core which is a big mistake and will result in staleness quickly. Ripping off 50 sit ups does not mean you will gain much core stimulation to bring out the abs! My clients focus on proper form, controlled tempos and use appropriate rep ranges based on the fiber make up of the muscles. High rep/rapid fire ab work is a waste of time. In addition to many benefits, the exercise ball reduces stability forcing the core to stabilize; a great example of this is using a narrow foot position when doing a swiss ball crunch vs. a wide stance. Do a set with each set position and see for yourself. Instead of placing your hands behind your head to crank up the torso try placing your finger tips on your ears so that you cannot cheat by applying pressure to the back of your head. This will also help to keep the neck in a neutral position.

Looks are Deceiving
Does this routine look easy? I assure you with proper execution it will be more challenging and far more productive than it looks. Follow the tempos by counting in your head. The first number is the descent, the second the pause on bottom, the third the accent and the fourth a strategic pause on top if needed.

                                      Sets    Reps     Tempos     Rest

A1. Swiss Ball Crunch            4      6-8      4-2-1-0      45
A2. Ball Leg Lower                4      4-6      4-1-1-0      45

B1. Swiss ball twisting Crunch 4      6-8      3-2-1-0      45
B2. Floor back extensions      4      6-8      3-1-1-1      45

Execution tips
A1. Increase the challenge by extending arms outward behind to increase the length of the weight lever. Someone with many years of experience, perfect form and tremendous strength can hold a weighted ball as well.  Be sure to achieve a full range of motion.

A2. Press your lower back into the floor so that the spine sustains a neutral position throughout the movement. Start with a knee bend of 30 degrees while holding the ball between your feet. Over time reduce the degree of knee bend to increase the length of the lever.

B1. Use a narrow foot position to decrease stability. Aim to bring your elbow to the direction of the opposite knee. However your torso should stop when perpendicular to the floor

B2. Start with your arms folded behind your head and progress by putting the arms out to the sides and also straight out ahead.

In your question you hit on a key point, the client you mentioned lost a great deal of body fat quickly to help uncover his core while improving development. There is no hope for a great set of abs without the right nutrition routine. The Extreme Crash diet is a great tool for rapid fat loss with summer just around the corner. Proven to be both effective and easy to execute the ECD can help to improve energy levels. Email scott@infinityfitness.com for your complementary copy today! Looking for a fat burning weight training routine? Ask for the Giant Set program. Tired of busting your butt for lousy results? What Our Customers Are Saying

John,
Grass-Fed Butter
One of the healthiest and nutritional things one can do on a daily basis is to take a raw organic brown omega 3 egg and immerse it completely with melted grass-fed butter. When the two are mixed completely, the sulfur and protein in the egg make the essential fatty acid of the grass-fed butter become water soluble which causes a pi-electron action. This then floods the cells with oxygen and thus cures anemia, provided you also get out in the sun for 20 minutes and let the sun hit your eyes and pineal gland.

This will battle anemia, cancer, balance neurotransmitters and cleanse the liver. The sun should be taken without sunscreen or glasses and intake of water and sodium is critical. The cell membrane is made up of protein and fat so this food meets both nutritional demands of the cell.

I used this to cleanse a toxic liver and to fight my Lou Gherigs disease 3 years ago!

$25 Discount for 40lb. Increments

Do not forget to take advantage of the 40 pound $25 discount by ordering 40 pound combinations of beef, lamb, pork, butter, goat, shrimp, bison, condiments, honey, rabbit, single item chicken selections, snack foods, pet food, and raw cheese.

This is our way of saying thank you for purchasing in volume. This can be any combination of products totaling 40 pounds and does not have to be specific to any category. Each 40 pound interval will yield the discount. For example, 80 pounds of product will yield a $50 discount and a 120 pound purchase will yield a $75 discount.

Minimum Purchase Rules

U.S. Wellness requires a $75 minimum purchase and a 7 pound minimum combined purchase of beef, lamb, pork, nutraceuticals, gourmet rabbit, grass-fed goat, grass-fed bison, raw cheese, single piece poultry, and butter.

The minimum is required since we have built the cost of shipping into the price of the product.  You will only see a $7.50 handling fee at checkout.

The issue is that the 20 pound bulk chicken and turkeys originate from separate cold storage center where those products are produced. It is not efficient to ship one package of beef as a stand alone item when the balance of the order originates 400 miles away.

The shopping cart will keep track and remind you if you are under the 7 pound limit for a combination of beef, lamb, pork, raw cheese, butter, goat, shrimp, soap and single honey bottle purchases. A Red font will appear under the shopping cart if you are under the minimum price or pound requirements.
