Dr. Sears - Why Selenium is Critical

January 24, 2010 Monticello, Missouri

Dear John,
cattle grazing

Time magazine is once again focusing on the beef industry, which we are happy to see.  One of their feature articles this week discussed the impact of beef cattle on the environment.  A 2006 report found that 18% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions were caused by livestock - with cattle being the main source.  The article goes on to explain that raising cattle in a conventional feedlot is "unsustainable", while raising grass-fed animals is a natural process that benefits everyone involved.  By rotating cattle (watch our video to understand how this happens) into new pasture daily, it gives grass more time to grow and replenish.  Manure from the cattle is a natural fertilizer and as the cattle walk over the fields, they work the manure and other nutrients into the land, thus producing better soils. Better soils help keep carbon dioxide underground and out of the air, which will help the greenhouse gas emission problem.

Are you trying to incorporate more vegetables and grass-fed meats into your diet?  Be sure to enter today for your chance to win The Garden of Eating: A Produce Dominated Diet and CookbookBased on the landmark work of Weston Price, D.D.S., The Garden of Eating provides a practical plan for obtaining the health-building benefits of an alkaline, produce-dominated diet that includes pasture-fed animal products. Sugar Intake and Pancreatic Cancer Linked

SugarWhile there has long been a connection between sugar intake and cancer, this new study shows specific ties to pancreatic cancer and sugar.  Fructose and sucrose intake might cause the disease, so says a study of multi-ethnic people.

Researchers analyzed data for 162,000 participants, including Caucasians, Japanese Americans and native Hawaiians in Hawaii and African Americans and Latinos in Los Angeles.  When the study began, participants were asked to answer a diet questionnaire. Over the next eight years, researchers followed up, looking for the occurrence of cancer, and compared the diet of those individuals with others in the test group.  The group recorded 434 cases of pancreatic cancer.

The researchers concluded: "High fructose and sucrose intakes may play a role in pancreatic cancer etiology.  Conditions such as overweight or obesity in which a degree of insulin resistance may be present may also be important."

Sucrose, extracted from sugarcane and sugar beets, is commonly known as cane sugar. Fructose occurs in fruits and fruit juices.

The pancreas, an organ that sits between the stomach and intestines, secretes digestive enzymes and produces insulin and other hormones that regulate the metabolism of sugar.
Pancreatic cancer usually spreads rapidly and is seldom detected in the early stages, making it one of the most
difficult cancers to treat and recover from.

Those who were obese and overweight with the highest sucrose intake had a 46 percent increase in risk of pancreatic cancer compared with the lowest intake.
Those who used the highest amounts of fructose were 35 percent more likely to have the cancer.

The analysis fit previous observations of the researchers showing that people with diabetes or pre-diabetic conditions were at high risk for pancreatic cancer.

Results of the diet are very consistent with what we know of the risk for diabetes and pancreatic cancer.  However, the study showed no link between pancreatic cancer and a factor known as glycemic load (a measure of carbohydrate intake) and additional sugars, as had been theorized.

The test group, known as a multiethnic cohort, was organized 24 years ago with 215,000 participants in Hawaii and California. Basic data were collected on their diets, physical activity, reproductive history, medications and subsequent illnesses. The National Cancer Institute funded the study to learn why some people get cancer.

Why Not to Take Acid Reducers for GERD, Acid Reflux and Gastritis

My mom was just diagnosed with a serious case of acid reflux and gastritis. Of course the first thing the doctor prescribed was an acid inhibitor. Knowing the serious side effects of some of these GI drugs, I wanted to look into some alternatives.

Call it heartburn, acid reflux or GERD -- whatever the name, if you are like millions of others, you may have this GI problem too. Although many just take this health issue for granted and throw back antacids, or resort to prescription strength medication, heartburn is not something to be taken lightly, and may be a sign of other more serious dietary or digestive disorders.

It seems the whole world is on heartburn medication of some sort. Did you know 35-45% of the population experiences heartburn? That's close to half the population! Heartburn or GERD is the most profitably treated diagnosis in America. Prescription medications are given out by doctors like candy. Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid are the top selling prescription drugs in the world.

This unfortunate state of affairs means that it is considered normal to have GERD and to take drugs for it. However, heartburn is not normal, and those experiencing it are definitely nowhere near optimal health.

What exactly is gastritis or acid reflux? It is acid that rises from the stomach and irritates the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, and results in the feeling of what is commonly called heartburn. Gastritis is an inflammation, irritation, or erosion of the lining of the stomach. Either condition can occur suddenly (acute) or gradually (chronic). Acid reflux usually feels like a burning pain in the middle of the chest or stomach. It's most bothersome at night, when lying down. Sometimes it can even feel like pressure in the chest. Some poor folks have it so bad it is difficult for them to keep food down and may even result in dental erosion.

Over time, this acid wash can damage the lower esophageal sphincter, and lead to a condition called Barrett's Esophagitis, which is generally considered to be a pre-cancerous condition. This becomes a pretty serious condition, and one not to be overlooked. Anybody with chronic reflux or heartburn should be checked out by a GI doctor, to rule out any other serious health conditions.

Occasionally, this chest pain can be confused with heart pain or a heart attack, or heart pain that is sometimes written off as just heartburn. If you are unsure about the cause of any pain in your chest and it persists or gets worse, go to physician or emergency room to have it checked out.

While many go the less expensive route and live on a steady diet of Tums, lots of acid reflux sufferers end up with prescription proton pump inhibitors to control their heartburn and excess acid. Proton pump inhibitors reduce the production of acid by blocking the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid.

There are thousands of research articles that show that suppressing stomach acid does not treat the disease, it only treats the symptoms. Suppressing the acid in the stomach can actually cause a pathogen, h.pylori, to flourish in the stomach. H.pylori is responsible for stomach ulcers and low-level chronic inflammation in the stomach. Obviously this will only make the GI situation worse...

"Must-Have" Mineral

By Al Sears, MD

Dear Readers,

Many minerals - like iron and zinc and selenium - are essential to life. Without them, your body could not function. And because your body can't make them, you need a reliable source from your diet.

On commercial farms, the soil no longer has the minerals it used to. That means you may be suffering from a mineral deficiency.

I consider selenium a "must-have" mineral. It's a major player in the fight against chronic disease. Selenium dramatically lowers your risk for many types of cancer. These include lung, colon, liver, and prostate cancer.

But there's more to selenium's protective power. A study from the University of North Carolina shows that selenium can also lower your risk of osteoarthritis.(1) Researchers found that people's risk was related to the level of selenium in their bodies.

To give you an idea of how powerful this mineral is, an increase of just one tenth of a part per million decreased their risk of osteoarthritis by 15 to 20 percent. The higher the amount of selenium, the more their risk dropped.

It's also one of the most powerful antioxidants on the planet. For your bones and joints, it protects your cartilage and prevents the inflammation that causes joint pain.

As a cancer fighter, selenium slows down tumors by cutting off their blood supply. And it kills cancer cells by triggering a built-in program that kills off damaged cells.(2)

What's more, it stops LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) from sticking to your arteries.(3)

So, how do you get more selenium in your diet?

Well, you won't find much of it in fruits or vegetables. That's why vegetarians often suffer from a lack of this very important mineral.

The best sources are fish, red meat, and Brazil nuts. I recommend you get at least 55 micrograms of selenium a day. Notice I said micrograms, not milligrams. The amount is very small.

The list below will give you a better idea(4):

Simple, Natural Cure to Diabetes

By Shane "The People's Chemist" Ellison
All Rights Reserved (C) www.thepeopleschemist.com

He thought it was too late.  After three years on the anti-diabetic medication Avandia™, nothing changed for Bruce.  He was still overweight, lethargic and his libido vanished years ago.  His doctors insisted that his medication would keep his type II diabetes in check, but not cure him.  Bruce felt that the odds of overcoming premature death were insurmountable.  That's when I assured him that it wasn't too late to regain his health and live the life of his dreams!  He had options, and one of them has served as a simple, diabetes cure for decades.

Type II diabetes is epidemic that steals and estimated 11 to 20 years of lifespan!   One in three Americans is threatened by it and most don't know.  Weight gain, depression, lethargy, and poor mental focus are early signs.  Like rotting fruit, the diabetes scourge kills internally and eventually manifests into the ghastly consequence of hypertension, polycystic ovarian syndrome (infertility among women), erectile dysfunction (infertility among men), heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and even cancer.

The drug industry has been working frantically to curtail the threat by studying a myriad of natural plants in the quest for a synthetic knock-off.  And they found one!  Working as a drug design chemist, I came across the anti-diabetic compound while reading The Journal of Natural Products - a publication highlighting medicinal compounds from nature.  It's known as banaba leaf, technically as corosolic acid.

Banaba leaf works like a sheep herder.  It guides blood sugar to the muscle cell so that it can be "corralled inside" where it is used as fuel, rather than float aimlessly in the blood.  The outcome: high blood sugar plummets to normal levels! But what happens next is simply amazing.

When blood sugar is controlled, our body lowers its production of a fat storing hormone known as insulin.  As insulin dissipates, so does belly fat.  Health rebounds.  Aging is slowed.  It works.  And Bruce knew it within two weeks!

Bruce started using Swanson brand banaba leaf - costing him about $5 per month - as suggested by me (I tested it for quality using state-of-the-art chemistry methods).  To increase absorption and distribution, I encouraged him to take part in high-intensity exercise every other day and only eat three meals per day.  Meals were simple.  If it tasted sweet, I told him to spit it out and let him know that he could no longer eat anything served out of a window or box.
In two weeks, his blood sugar dropped to levels he had not seen in 3 years on traditional medication!  It went from averaging 350 mg/dL to 115!  After 90 days, it was back to normal, hovering at about 95.

Bruce was astonished.  He wondered why his doctor didn't prescribe it.  I stressed to him that natural medicine - as written about in my book, Over-The-Counter Natural Cures - didn't fit the business model of the industry that I used to work for.  It was fueled by patent rights that came with synthetic copy-cats.  Thus, natural counterparts are always forgotten about.  Worse, the synthetic versions are always pricey and far more dangerous because you can't mimic Mother Nature in a lab.

Learning how to control blood sugar naturally with banaba is the most simple, inexpensive and effective way to reverse diabetes and ward off the host of other diseases caused by high blood sugar - hypertension, polycystic ovarian syndrome (infertility among women), erectile dysfunction (infertility among men), heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's and even cancer. People like Bruce who take charge of their health can be set free from the modern day plague that claims the lives of millions every year.

Dear Dr. Serrano,

Hello, my question pertains to the subject of medicating children for supposedly having psychiatric disorders that normally occur in adults.  I do not currently have any children but hope to some day.  It worries me that I may one day be told to stuff pills down my childs throat, because they aren't behaving like adults at the age of 5.

If there are actual behavioral problems in a child, can these things be improved through the application of a diet that is heavy in grass-fed beef, wild-caught fish, and basically a diet similar to that of our hunter-gatherer ancestors?  I know I'm jumping the gun a bit, not having children yet, but if their is any chance providing my future child with the proper nutrition will keep the drugs away, then I am all for it.

Sincerely,
B.A.

____________________________________________

Dear B.A.,

I am impressed that you want to start this early and you are thinking about the future of your children.  I am going to bring ideas that some people might not agree with it but hopefully it will make a difference in the future of many children.
  1. Children need both parents mother and father
  2. You need faith: believe in GOD or whatever faith you practice and practice it with your children.
  3. Never argue on front of the children when you disagree
  4. Even the bible states that a good rod brings wisdom to the children.  No, I am not talking about beating your child but using appropriate correction such as spanking.  The punishment should fit the crime.
  5. NUTRITION! Stick with organic foods, eat good fats, low sugar intake, never buy fat that is not organic, including butter, cheeses, red meat or creams.
  6. Water, water, water.
  7. Eat a variety of foods, not the same thing every day.
  8. "Tell me who you walk with and I tell you who you are."  Keep an eye on your kids' friends and companionship.
  9. Eat dinner together and talk about the day.
  10. Limit TV, phone and computers.
  11. Spend time with your child.
  12. Don't be friends - be parents.
  13. Show respect to the other parent.
To answer your question about changing behavior, almost every kid that I have in my practice does not take drugs, the only two or three that do is because they were prescribed before and the parents don't want to work at it.

The three most common reasons:
  1. Bad diet.
  2. No respect for adults, siblings, or time with children.
  3. Spoiled children.
  4. Parents let somebody else raise their child.
Best Regards,

Dr. Serrano

Need A Training Lift?
By: Scott Mendelson

Scott,

I hear a lot of conflicting info regarding training for fat loss from other female friends and trainers.  Some say cardio is the key and others weight training.  I am not sure what to do, but I know that for the last 2 years I have not reached my goals, hitting a plateau after about 8 weeks which has led me to quit altogether.  My legs and buttocks are a mess, what can I do to firm up?

Mary

Firming Up the Backside and Slashing Body Fat ASAP

Mary,

the right combination of interval cardio, weight training and nutrition planning can get you to where you want to go FAST!  It sounds like there has not been a cohesive strategy in the past which would account for hitting a wall.  Factors must change strategically to keep progress going!!!  My clients avoid plateaus by having the right program designs which FORCE the body to use more stored fat as fuel through many pathways.

Weight Training is Highly Effective for PERMANENT Fat Loss!

Let's bust some myths- weight training is not only for men!    Furthermore weight training correctly for fat loss, not bodybuilding will prevent any unwanted accumulation of excess muscle mass.  In a majority of cases females use body building oriented routines that do not align with their goals.  I structure routines to torch body fat!  There are many factors to consider when building programs, which is why I consistently collect data from clients so that the proper refinements can be made- preventing any progress plateaus.

Proper Execution for a Great Set of Buns!

You will not see an improvement in the firmness of any body part without resistance training.  Many women come to me with the same complaint and within a short period of time improvements come via proper training and fat loss. The glutes are typically a neglected muscle since poor training techniques do not recruit them properly.  The routine below is a great start for you, pay close attention to form and execution as this will have a huge impact on your rate of success.  For example pushing explosively off the front foot will help to increase glute recruitment.  Make sure you go through a full range of motion and do not "cheat" by going only partially through the movements.  People with injuries or other limitations will have to take a different approach initially

                                Sets    Reps      Tempo     Rest
A1. Dynamic Lunge         3       5-7      3-1-x-0      30
A2. Swiss ball leg curl     3       5-7       3-1-1-1     30

B1. Side Lunge              3       5-7       3-2-1-0     30
B2. Bench Step Up         3       5-7       3-1-x-1     30

C1. Body weight squats  3       8-10      4-2-x-0     30

Execution Tips

A1. Pushing explosively off the front foot will help to increase glute recruitment.  Hold dumbbells as you become more experienced with the exercise.

A2. Make sure the ball comes all the way back to touch your glutes and legs should be straight at the end of the movement

B1. Mark spots on the floor for where your feet should land to make sure the length of your stride is equal for both legs.  You should reach a parallel position on bottom.

B2. Your knee should be even with the height of your thigh when placed on the bench

C1. Cross your hands behind your head.  Reach back with your glutes to initiate the movement which will help to place more focus on the glutes than the thighs.  Place a solid object with a flat surface such as a chair behind you at parallel squat depth height for you to touch on each rep.

Macronutrient Cycling for Rapid Fat Loss

By mid February millions of Americans will see progress stall out during their New Year fat loss mission.  The simple reason for this is a lack of "know how."  Do not become another statistic in the broad category of people who FAIL to reach their goals and lose all of the progress made during the first few months of the year by putting body fat right back on within 2-3 months of the initial loss.

Dr. Serrano is responsible for many nutrition break throughs; macronutrient cycling is one of the greatest in the last 10 years!  Just like training the nutrition plan must change strategically to avoid metabolic staleness, increase fat burning enzymes and optimize fat burning hormones.  Eating the same things day in and day out is the fast track to slow progress, food allergies and general frustration.  Email Scott@infinityfitness.com for a complementary copy of the male or female macronutrient cycling fat loss article and plan.

Do not forget to take advantage of the 40 pound $25 discount by ordering 40 pound combinations of beef, lamb, pork, butter, goat, shrimp, bison, condiments, honey, rabbit, single item chicken selections, snack foods, pet food, and raw cheese.

This is our way of saying thank you for purchasing in volume. This can be any combination of products totaling 40 pounds and does not have to be specific to any category. Each 40 pound interval will yield the discount. For example, 80 pounds of product will yield a $50 discount and a 120 pound purchase will yield a $75 discount.

Minimum Purchase Rules

U.S. Wellness requires a $75 minimum purchase and a 7 pound minimum combined purchase of beef, lamb, pork, nutraceuticals, gourmet rabbit, grass-fed goat, grass-fed bison, raw cheese, single piece poultry, and butter.

The minimum is required since we have built the cost of shipping into the price of the product.  You will only see a nominal handling at checkout.

The issue is the 20 pound bulk chicken and turkeys  originate from separate cold storage center where those products are produced. It is not efficient to ship one package of beef as a stand alone item when the balance of the order originates 400 miles away.

The shopping cart will keep track and remind you if you are under the 7 pound limit for a combination of beef, lamb, pork, raw cheese, butter, goat, shrimp, soap and single honey bottle purchases. A Red font will appear under the shopping cart if you are under the minimum price or pound requirements.
