Thanksgiving Turkey Tips!
Save Money While Saving Your Heart,
Chicken Liver Sale & 15% Promo Code

November 14, 2010   Monticello, Missouri
Dear John,
USWM Logo
We are writing this week from the Weston A. Price Conference in King of Prussia, PA.  We have had an excellent conference so far and thoroughly enjoyed meeting many long-time customers, as well as sharing our Organ Sausages, Beef Jerky and Snack Sticks with many new customers!

The Politics of Food has been the theme this year, and we have been very impressed with how many knowledgeable and exciting speakers have gathered for one of the best food conferences in the country.

Do you have your Thanksgiving dinner planned yet?  Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away and if you haven't bought your turkey yet now is the time!  You'll want to allow plenty of time to thaw the turkey once it arrives.  We have an assortment of turkeys and sizes to choose from.  If you're not sure what size you need, we recommend figuring 1 lb per person.  Visit the USDA Turkey Fact Page for turkey thawing and cooking information.  Place your order before 10:00 am CST Wednesday to ensure timely shipping of your Thanksgiving turkey!

Looking for an easy cold-weather dinner but don't have time to prepare one during the week?  Let us help.  Our Pre-Cooked Pot Roast & Gravy is on sale this week, and is also one of our best kept secrets.  This two pound roast comes fully cooked with gravy and five healthy herbs right in the package.  Simply place the roast in your Crockpot on low heat before leaving for work, and by the time you get home dinner will be ready and your kitchen will smell like a gourmet restaurant!

One of the 'healthy herbs' in our Pre-Cooked Pot Roast is turmeric, which is one of the healthiest spices we have found.  Its anti-inflammatory nature has been shown to relieve arthritis and joint pain.  According to Jonny Bowden's The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, turmeric has an antitumor effect, and in a 2006 medical study the curcumin in turmeric actually inhibited the growth of human colon cancer cells.  Its list of medicinal properties goes on, making it an excellent staple to add to your diet.

Don't miss out!  Our always-in-high-demand Chicken Livers are on sale this week so be sure and stock up.  Free Range Chicken Livers are often hard to find, and are packed with health benefits.  According to the Weston A. Price Foundation, pastured chicken livers are an excellent source of Vitamins A,D,E,K and B12 as well as Iron.  These nutrients are especially important for growing babies and adults alike.  For an excellent Chicken Liver Pate recipe from last year's Weston A. Price Conference visit their website.

Best November Regards,

John, LeeAnn, Megan, Tressa, and Jennifer on behalf of the farm families of US Wellness Meats.

Help For Holiday Stress

Wow, here it is almost Thanksgiving again, and the holidays are just around the corner. Although that means lots of social gatherings, fun family get-togethers and festive eating, it can also mean lots of added stress. For many, finances may be tighter, so shopping, gift-giving, overspending, and feeling overly stretched for time can create a whopping sense of stress. How to cope?

While some stress in our lives is actually healthy and gives us ambition and drive, chronic stomach-in-knots, teeth clenching, keep-you-up-at-night kind of stress is NOT healthy. Our bodies suffer the consequences and stress will end up wearing you down, depleting you of valuable nutrients, making you sick, and causing a multitude of other associated problems.

The body's natural response to cope with stress is elevated adrenaline levels, which creates that 'fight or flight' feeling. These days, we suffer more from chronic situational stress than from physical harm. Yet, we feel the physical effects of adrenaline: a faster heart beat, higher blood pressure, increased utilization of energy, blood sugar fluctuations, aggression and irritability, sleep disturbances, compromised immunity, and appetite changes.

Unless critical nutrients are quickly replaced, coping mechanisms further break down and emotional problems tend to worsen. When you're under stress, hormones are released and they in turn increase the speed of many functions and systems of the body. With this faster rate, a large amount of nutrients are pushed into the bloodstream and excreted. The body loses nutrients all the time, but when you're under pressure, you lose even more...

Dr. Al Sears
Too Young for Puberty

By: Al Sears, MD

Dear Health-Conscious Reader,

I'm going to tell you how to combat one of the most dangerous threats to your health today: estrogen.

Estrogen is found in the hormone-laden meat you get at the grocery store. It's found in plastic, too. Every time you take a sip from your water bottle or heat up a frozen dinner, you're ingesting harmful chemicals that create synthetic estrogen in your body.  This can cause you to have too much estrogen. Why is that a problem?

There are many ways that too much estrogen in your system can make you sick. It can cause heart disease and five different kinds of cancer, and it can make you fat, impotent, depressed and tired. Too much estrogen is also the biggest undiagnosed cause of prostate disease in men.

Here's something else about the estrogen we're putting in our food that is very disturbing - girls are getting sexually mature features at younger and younger ages.  In fact, I just read a new study that shows the number of seven-year-old girls hitting puberty has doubled since 1997 (1,2).
No one can tell us what that is going to do to the health of those little girls.  This is one more case where we've altered our environment without awareness of the consequences.

We're not living, moving, or eating like our native ancestors. Everything from the beef at the grocery store to the water bottles you drink from can expose you to these estrogens.

But, you don't have to be a victim. You can fight back.

To help keep your hormone levels balanced, I recommend resveratrol. It's a safe and natural antioxidant that helps control estrogen in your body.

You can get this amazing mineral from red wine, red grapes, cranberries, blueberries and peanuts. I suggest you take 100 mg a day for the most benefits.  In addition to resveratrol, here are some other things you can do:

1. Eat hormone-free meat. Choose grass-fed beef and free-range poultry to avoid eating any of the hormones pumped in standard grain-fed cows and caged chickens. Grain-fed beef is full of hormones, including estrogen. Instead, opt for grass-fed beef. These cows roam and graze on pesticide-free grass. Free-range chicken is also the best choice. There are no added hormones to make the chickens plump, and they're free to run on a farm.

2. Eat cage-free eggs. Cage-free eggs come from free-range chickens. They're hormone-free and have more of the nutrients you need. Plus, they taste great.

3. Avoid plastic as much as possible. Don't drink out of plastic water bottles or eat food stored in plastic containers. Even aluminum cans are lined with plastics, so be wary. They contain the chemicals that mimic estrogen. Instead, use metal or glass containers.

4. Eat cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and cabbage can help lower your estrogen levels.

To Your Good Health,
Dr. Sears

I love to spend money. Whether it's buying books for my child, a lift ticket for a day of snowboarding, or date night with my wife, I get great satisfaction out of spending money on products, services, and activities that I perceive as having value.

But more than spending, I enjoy investing. Wise investing allowed me to escape an arduous nine-to-five career with one of the world's largest drug providers. And making wise investments in my health - in the foods I eat and the activities I engage in - has been one of the most important things I've ever done.

The fact is, your health is an investment. Possibly the best investment you will ever make. If you invest in it now, you will see big returns in the future. If you don't, it could cost you big time down the line.

According to a recent report by CNN Money, "The retirement health tab can run between $64,000 and $122,000 for a 65-year-old man whose former employer pays his insurance premiums, and between $86,000 and $140,000 for a woman of the same age. For retirees who don't have access to an employer-offered plan, the costs - mostly for prescription drugs - run even higher."

In addition to exorbitant drug expenses, most adult Americans have one foot in the grave. Obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer are at an all-time high and it's expected to get worse. The Journal of the American Medical Association predicted that one in three born in the year 2000 will succumb to Type II diabetes, which is simply a "gateway" disease to all the pandemic killers. This rampant sickness is being met with an arsenal of cholesterol-lowering drugs, blood pressure meds, anti-depressants, and hypoglycemics. None have been proven to increase lifespan. They are toxic and ineffective, yet, they are continually pushed upon us... for one reason: financial gain...

Dr. Serrano,

Which is better for weight loss: grass-fed butter, ghee or extra virgin coconut oil? This would be for cooking meats, eggs, etc.

Also do you think creatine supplements are safe and good for weight loss?  I'm trying again to lose weight.

Thanks!
Kelly

Dear Kelly,

It depends on what you are missing in your diet, but I would use grass-fed butter.  If you are severely allergic to milk, I would use ghee because it is pure fat and doesn't have any protein solids.

But to cook, nothing is better than coconut oil, hands down.

Creatine is one of the safest supplements ever created and is very high in grass-fed beef.

Thank You,

Dr. Serrano

Why Does Controlling Rep Speed Accelerate Fat Loss?

By: Scott Mendelson

Hi Scott,

I started working out with a friend of mine, Lucy, out of shear jealousy since she lost 15 lbs and looks great while I have slacked.  You design her training programs and I was curious as to why each rep has an assigned timing system for execution?  Whatever the reason- it is producing results for Lucy and I felt that the workout was the most productive I have ever tried since starting 2 weeks ago.

Sharron
Chicago, IL
      ______________________________________

Sharron,

Great question.  The rep speed (tempo) ensures that the trainee puts the muscles under tension for a certain length of time.  For example, lowering the weight for 3 seconds, pausing on the bottom for 1, lifting in 1 sec with no rest at completion means each rep will last 5 seconds x 8 reps for example, is 40 seconds.  Set durations of 40-60 seconds for women work very well for stimulating the production of fat burning hormones!

Proper Form = Less Injuries

Watch most people in the gym and they throw the weights up and down with no consideration for form or tempo.  This is just a way of going through the motions.  Controlling the rep speed increases the challenge tremendously and forces the muscles to work much harder by reducing momentum.  I am also a strong believer in a controlled tempo to help improve form which prevents many common training injuries.

Boosting Fat Burning Hormones

Back to the real reason why you asked the question - the tempo is one of many factors that can be manipulated to make the body work harder.  This factor in particular is very important for increasing lactic acid, which in turn boosts the growth hormone which is a potent fat burning hormone.  For example, Lucy started out with shorter tempos a few months ago and has gradually increased the set durations while other factors such as reps, exercises, rest periods, etc, have been manipulated.  Customizing these aspects to fit the needs and goals of the individual client is very important.

Benefits of Training vs. Just Exercising

Take two people of similar age, goals and body fat percentage, if one uses one of my customized routines and the other just "wings" it, my client will earn progress 2-3 times faster than the other person.  There is a huge difference between going to the gym to exercise which is just exerting yourself versus training for a result.

Interval Sprints for Rapid Fat Loss

Lucy also uses an interval sprint routine - join her for one of those sessions, but be careful as she has built a base over time and you may not be able to keep up!  Short interval sessions on off-weight training days are excellent for fat loss.   Most trainees are shocked when I assign a specific interval routine as they were always led to believe cardio is cardio - just do a certain number of minutes each week and you are set.  Nothing could be further from the truth as steady state cardio, when done in excess, actually stimulates fat storage.  Intervals on the other hand force the body to use more stored fat as fuel while naturally elevating fat burning hormones.

US Wellness, Sweet & Spicy Wings

We smoked the chicken wings and thighs today and had a very hard
time controlling ourselves.  They are the best we have ever tasted!

To be honest, when I opened the package and saw how large the wings were, I expected them to be a bit tough.  But no!  They are great.
