Dear John, Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!  We hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing holiday weekend.  If you are doing any baking for your Halloween guests, be sure and visit our October recipe page for some sweet fall snack recipes and photos!

With Halloween already here, it means that Thanksgiving is fast approaching.  Let us make your dinner plans easy - we have plenty of Thanksgiving Turkeys ready to ship direct to your door in plenty of time for Thanksgiving dinner.  See our Turkey section online for all the details, we have many different sizes available to suit your family's needs.

Have you met our newest feature chef?  Chef Paul Zweben has worked in some of the finest restaurants in New York City, and was kind enough to sit down with us and share his grass-fed cooking tips, as well as teach us a tasty recipe for Pan Seared Delmonico Steaks!

Don't forget about the fast-approaching Weston A. Price Conference!  If you will be in the King of Prussia, PA area November 12-14 be sure and stop by the Valley Forge Convention Center.  We look forward to this conference every year for many reasons - the amazing food, fascinating speakers, chatting with some of the best food bloggers in the industry, and being surrounded by the healthiest, most knowledgeable food experts in the country!  If you can't stay all weekend, simply stop by for a day and sample some of the best real food there is.

The Weston A. Price Foundation was founded in 1999, as a way to  educate the public about the research of nutrition pioneer Dr. Weston Price, whose studies of isolated primitive cultures in the 1930's help to determine the optimal characteristics of human diet.

Although it has been seven decades since Dr. Weston Price conducted his studies in nutrition and physical degeneration, it is all the more clear today that his work and the dietary guidelines established then are as vital and beneficial to our bodies as they have ever been. We need to return to these roots in our diets to protect and preserve not only ourselves and our health, but also the generations to come.

Be sure and read Shane Ellison's in-depth article this week about sugar addiction - the dangers there are probably much higher than you think.  Did you know that being a sugar addict can eliminate 11-20 years off your life span?  Read the article to learn how to satisfy your sweet tooth without compromising your health.

If ice cream is your favorite way to satisfy those sweet cravings - check out our Raw, Organic Cashew Cream Ice Cream.  We have six decadent flavors that are sweetened with either agave or dates, a much safer (and healthy) way keep your sweet tooth happy!

Happy Halloween!

BreakingNewsDad's Weight and Diet Linked to Offspring's Risk of Diabetes

Medical researchers have for the first time shown a link between a father's weight and diet at the time of conception and an increased risk of diabetes in his offspring.

The finding, reported in the journal Nature, is the first in any species to show that paternal exposure to a poor diet initiates progression to metabolic disease in the next generation.

"We've known for a while that overweight mothers are more likely to have chubby babies, and that a woman's weight before and during pregnancy can play a role in future disease in her children, partly due to the critical role the intrauterine environment plays in development," said study leader Professor Margaret Morris, from UNSW's School of Medical Sciences.

"But until now, the impact of the father's environment - in terms of his diet - on his offspring had not been investigated." The work formed the basis of the PhD study of Dr. Sheau-Fang Ng, who showed that paternal environmental factors such as diet and weight are important contributors to disease in the next generation.

In the Nature study, male rats were fed a fatty diet to induce obesity and glucose intolerance and then mated with normal weight females. The resulting female offspring exhibited impaired glucose tolerance and insulin secretion as young adults.

"A family history of diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for the disease; however until now, the extent of any influence of non-genetic paternal factors has been unclear."

Professor Morris said the research showed that overweight fathers can play a role in "programming" epigenetic changes in their offspring, possibly through effects on their sperm caused by their consumption of high-fat food. Epigenetics is a process whereby changes in gene expression - and hence function - can occur even when there are no alterations in the DNA sequence.

Professor Morris said the study expands our understanding of the role environmental factors might play on a child's physiology and metabolism.

"It adds another level to our understanding of the causes of the growing epidemics in obesity and diabetes," she said. "While here we studied female offspring, we need to examine whether the effect is also found in males."

The work was carried out in collaboration with scientists in the UNSW Schools of Medical Sciences and Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, the Garvan Institute, and the University of Adelaide.

Professor Morris will present the findings at the Australia and New Zealand Obesity Society meeting in Sydney.

The Country's Most Preventable Epidemic

According to some of the most recent estimates, the number of Americans with diabetes will double in the next 25 years, from the current 23.7 million to 44.1 million in 2034. Of course, annual health costs for treating those patients are expected to soar, nearly tripling from the current $113 billion to some $336 billion.

This latest information on the diabetes trend in the United States is a very sad testament that the food pyramid, the media, conventional medicine and the food industry are very wrong in their standard diabetes recommendations - in terms of lifestyle, diet and medication, are incorrect.

Even sadder is that these current figures are on the conservative side as they are based on the obesity levels staying the same and not increasing. So it is entirely possible that the number of diabetes cases, and resulting health care costs, could be even higher than predicted.

The past is a great example. Previous estimates from 1991 projected that around 11.6 million Americans would have diabetes by 2030. However the number of Americans with diabetes already in 2010 is double that number!

Besides the rapidly growing numbers of diagnosed diabetics, even worse are those with 'pre-diabetes', who are only steps away from having the full-blown disease. Nearly one out of four people in the US have a condition called 'pre-diabetes' and many do not even know they have this condition.

What is 'pre-diabetes'?

Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have 'pre-diabetes' - in which blood glucose levels stay higher than the normal range, but are not high enough to be diagnosed as full-blown diabetes. There are approximately some 60 million people in the United States who have pre-diabetes. Recent research has shown that similar long-term damage to the heart and circulatory system may already be occurring during the pre-diabetes stage...

100,000 Prescription Deaths and Counting...

By: Al Sears, MD

Dear Health-Conscious Reader,

Last year, over half a million Americans were hurt by prescription drugs. And 100,000 of them died.(1,2)

How did that happen?  If some prescription drugs are that dangerous, how are they getting approved?  The answer is not simple. There are good people involved in the process. But the incentive in the system has become distorted.

Here's how it happened...

The FDA now regulates $2.5 trillion worth of food, drugs and medical devices. That's 25 percent of all U.S. consumer spending.(3)  Plus, over the last two decades, America's appetite for prescription drugs exploded. The FDA, struggling to keep up, needed to get drugs approved faster.
But the bureaucracy has grown so big that it's not very efficient. So the FDA tried to shortcut the time for drug approval by getting the drug companies themselves to pay for the research.

In 1992, Congress passed the Prescription Drug User Fee Act to give the FDA more desperately needed funds. The law allows drug companies to pay the FDA to approve their drugs.  This funding is called "user fees," which this year will equal nearly one-third - $920 million - of the FDA's budget.(4)

The fees make sense for the drug companies because delayed drug approval means millions in lost revenue. So, paying "user fees" to the FDA gets drugs approved fast. In fact, this funding boost has made the FDA the fastest drug approval agency in the world...

How to Get Your Sweet Fix Without Sabotaging Your Health

By: Shane "The People's Chemist" Ellison   www.thepeopleschemist.com

If you could make one simple change in your diet to help you melt fat, sleep better, and improve your memory...wouldn't you do it? What if that same simple dietary change could increase your energy, conquer depression, save your eyesight, restore your mental alertness, get your energy rockin', and increase your life span?

This may sound too good to be true. But it's not, and you don't have to take drugs. Nor do you have to try some newfangled experimental supplements. Or stop eating. Or even give up the foods you love.

It's as simple as reducing the amount of sugar you eat.

This is not a trick. I said you don't have to give up the foods you love, and that includes sweets. You can actually give up sugar and keep your sweet tooth happy. This is the greatest health secret of all time. And I'm going to teach you how to incorporate it into your life.

Before I tell you how, I want you to know just why you should give up sugar.

It's not just because of all the aforementioned benefits. It's because sugar can have serious health consequences.
Have you ever been plagued by hard-to-diagnose health problems? You know something is wrong, but your doctor can't seem to figure out what's causing them? You...
  • Can't lose weight, no matter how hard you exercise or diet
  • Feel depressed, even though you're typically a happy person
  • Can't get a solid night's sleep
  • Feel sluggish at work
  • Lack mental focus
  • Have lost your libido
  • Suffer from rising blood pressure
Well, it's not all in your head. It could be your sugar addiction.

My six-year-old can recite all the dangers of sucrose (table sugar) in a matter of two minutes. She can also warn you of the risks associated with those artificial sweeteners in pretty packets. And because she still likes to get her "sweet fix," she can tell you which natural sweeteners are best to use in tea, cookies, and cake. Not bad, considering that the self-appointed custodians of our health - physicians - are totally clueless about the sweetener epidemic that is sabotaging us.

If a first grader can master the problems with sugar and understand how to choose the right alternatives, you can too...

Dr. Serrano,

I have a question that's been bothering me a long time - what is hands down the best to take: fish oil or krill oil?

People like Dr. Mercola promote Krill oil, but then others say listen to the Weston A. Price Foundation and get fermented cod liver oil?  What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
George
 ______________________________________________

Dear George,

Wow, you asked me a tough question and I am going to answer you with a few words that you are not going to like: I don't know and I don't think either is best.

I did research on fats for a long time, and fat supplementation depends on what you eat, exercise, do everyday, and what kind of allergies you have.  If you are allergic to shellfish then you can't have the krill, just to be safe.  Also, what if you are deficient in GLA or CLA?  Are any of these supplements providing any of these fats?

In the real world I would use the fermented cod liver oil first, then krill if those were the only two supplements available.  For me, the best one is Alpha Omega-3 from Infinity Fitness because it not only provides the Omega 3 oils but also provides GLA, CLA, Omega 9 and small dosages of alpha linolenic acid, which is an essential fat that you need.

George, I did create this supplement, but look at the dosages and compare concentrations and ingredients and you will be pleasantly surprised. I do have financial ties to this supplement and I don't want to sell you on it, all I want you to do is to compare dosages, ingredients and formulation and what you need, and you will be able to decide which one will be better for you.  Finally, to answer your question, if my choice was only the three above and not Alpha Omega 3, I would use cod liver oil.

Thank You,

Dr. Serrano

Avoid The Holiday Fat Gaining Trap with Muscle

By: Scott Mendelson

Scott,

I am determined not to sabotage myself during November and December this year.  In prior years I have gained an average of 10 lbs of body fat and I am tired of making excuses for myself.  After following your suggestions for fat loss training with great success since the summer, I am looking to get aggressive with muscle growth during the holidays, when I tend to eat more than usual.  What program do you suggest for someone with a lot of training experience who has tried nearly every training method under the sun?  Can I get away with eating some large holiday meals without piling on fat?

Tom, MN
      ______________________________________

Tom,

Your approach is brilliant for several reasons.  The unfortunate reality is that most people screw up badly during the last couple months of the year and give back a large portion or possibly all of the progress they gained during the other ten months of the year.  Weather changes reducing motivation, and holidays in particular can pile on body fat like crazy.  There must be specific goals as people never just stay the same - they get better or worse with no middle ground.  When I hear "maintain" from people I equate that to inevitable failure.  I have seen clients regularly pack on 10-15 lbs of muscle in 6-8 weeks with the Multi Set Growth System Below.

Cheat Without Packing on Body Fat

Yes, you can get away with massive cheating during the holidays if you set things up correctly, and these extra nutrients can be used to support muscle growth while reviving a sluggish metabolism for those who have been dieting for an extended period of time.  Email Scott@infinityfitness.com to master the cheat meal strategies.

The better the food choices you make, the less damage they can do.  Cook without trans fats, which retard fat cell function, and choose grass fed food items whenever possible. Weight training is a metabolic game changer and must be done a couple hours before any large meals to force raw materials into muscles instead of fat cells.  The hormonal environment created by weight training helps to prevent body fat accumulation in many ways.  Less daylight and some time off from work for many people provides ample time to train.  Do not fall into the losing strategy of putting off goals until the New Year.

Body fat begins to pile on quickly when several days of bad eating occur in a row.  This primes fat storage hormone levels while driving up hunger, as well as cravings.  Having the discipline to stop the madness is crucial.  Make a decision beforehand not to let this happen.  Do not fall into the trap of doing what everyone else chooses to do.  If they want a belly like Santa during the holidays that is their choice, but it does not have to be yours...

Pemmican BarYour Pemmican is amazing!  I just tried it for the first time, THANK YOU for making this!  And for making the salt/cherry/honey-free version, I'm allergic/intolerant to all of those things (many salts have shellfish fragments, I have to order a special kind).

It's literally the most exciting food I've ever experienced.  It allows me to travel and eat, it's great for snacks, and so healthy.  And it tastes great.

Thank you!
