Grass-Fed Grilling Goes Live!
Memorial Day Steak & Rib Sale!

May 29, 2011
   Monticello, Missouri
Dear John,
Memorial Day
Memorial Day Greetings!  We hope everyone is having a relaxing Memorial Day weekend.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families who have a loved one serving at home or abroad, and especially to the American Heroes who have given the ultimate sacrifice protecting freedom in this great country.

Is sugar toxic?  That is the name of a recent article in the NY Times that is generating a lot of press, and it asks some of the hard sugar questions.  Does sugar cause heart disease?  Is sugar leading to cancer?  The article provides an in-depth analysis based on many leading scientific reports and is a must-read for anyone concerned about their health, which should be all of us.  Then be sure and watch The Bitter Truth video that inspired the story, and is gaining almost 50,000 new views per day posted by leading researcher Robert Lustig.  We'll warn you - the video is 90 minutes long, so if you don't have that much time, our friend Sean Croxton of Underground Wellness has posted the shorter version of Robert Lustig's presentation.  This video explains why all calories are not created equal, and explains the sugar equation in terms all of us can understand.

Speaking of no sugar, we are eagerly awaiting our first copy of the Paleo Magazine which was mailed this week.  If you are one of the lucky readers who have already subscribed your first edition should be coming soon.  If you haven't signed up yet, visit their Facebook page to see what all the excitement is about!  This is the first print magazine dedicated to paleo/primal living.  We have customers and friends all over the country who are healthier, happier and enjoying life to the fullest thanks to the endless benefits of a paleo lifestyle.

If you are looking for a new paleo-friendly recipe, try the Steak & Eggs recipe in our recipe section below, provided by our friends at the Food Lovers Primal Palate!

Our prayers are still with the residents of Joplin, MO, who were hit with a deadly F5 tornado this past week.  Their city has been destroyed and thousands are without homes, jobs and utilities.  The death count continues to rise and there are still hundreds of people unaccounted for.  If you would like to help with relief efforts, your donation would be more than appreciated.  The Red Cross and Salvation Army are both accepting donations to help with relief efforts.  The Joplin Globe has also set up a Facebook page to help find survivors, and to reach out to others still looking for family and friends.

We hope everyone has a safe and memorable Memorial Day weekend.  Don't miss out on our Memorial Day sales - the tender Teres Major Steaks are on sale, along with the tasty BBQ Short Ribs.  There is also a 15% discount code available for any order under 40 lbs in Catherine's article below!

Also, be sure and tune into the Fox & Friends morning show on Fox on Memorial Day morning as we will be featured on their grilling special!  We are very excited about this show and the opportunity to talk about our grass-fed products live on national television so please tune in and send us your feedback!
Honorable Regards,

John, Lee Ann, Megan, Tressa, Jennifer, and Amanda on behalf of the farm families of US Wellness Meats.

Fish Oil May Have Positive Effects on Mood, Alcohol Craving, New Study ShowsBreakingNewsarticle

Fish Oil

Omega 3 fatty acids may be beneficial for more than just the heart. Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine have found at a molecular level a potential therapeutic benefit from these dietary supplements for treating alcohol abuse and psychiatric disorders.

In a multi-year study, researchers showed conclusive behavioral and molecular benefits for omega 3 fatty acid given to mice models of bipolar disorder. The fatty acid DHA, which is one of the main active ingredients in fish oil, "normalized their behavior," according to Alexander B. Niculescu, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and the lead author of the study reported online in the Nature Publishing Group journal Translational Psychiatry.

Using a stress-sensitive mouse model of bipolar disorder developed in his lab, Dr. Niculescu and his colleagues studied the influence of dietary DHA. The mice have characteristic bipolar symptoms including being depressed and, when subjected to stress, becoming manic.

"The mice that were given DHA normalized their behavior, they are not depressed and when subjected to stress, they do not become manic," said Dr. Niculescu. "When we looked into their brains, using comprehensive gene expression studies, we were surprised to see that genes that are known targets of psychiatric medications were modulated and normalized by DHA."

An unexpected finding of the research was the discovery that the mice given DHA also showed a reduced desire for alcohol.

"These bipolar mice, like some bipolar patients, love alcohol. The mice on DHA drank much less; it curtailed their alcohol abusive behavior," he said, adding that this is a completely novel finding. To verify this finding, the researchers studied another well-established animal model of alcoholism, the alcohol preferring P rats, and obtained similar results.

"We believe a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids may help the treatment and prevention of bipolar disorder, and may help with alcoholism as well," he said.

The researchers also found correlations between mouse brain molecular changes and molecular markers in their blood, so called "biomarkers."

"There is now substantial evidence at the molecular level that omega-3 fatty acids work on the brain in ways similar to psychiatric drugs," said Dr. Niculescu. "With these biomarker findings, we can now move forward as a field and do more targeted clinical studies in humans."

Omega 3 fatty acids are known to be good for one's health, good for one's brain, and lack major side-effects, as opposed to some psychiatric medications, he said. Perhaps, he said, omega 3 fatty acid could in the future be used as an adjuvant treatment to minimize the amount of psychiatric drugs needed to produce the same effect, especially in pregnant women or women who intend to get pregnant.

"A lot more work needs to be done in this area," Dr. Niculescu said.

The research was supported by a National Institutes of Health Director's New Innovator Award grant to Dr. Niculescu.

Scientific Lies

By: Catherine Ebeling, RN, BSN

Every day we read headlines like, "high fat diet can cause heart disease",  "consumption of whole grain products decreases risk of cancer by 36%" "red meat linked to colon cancer".

Sometimes one headline actually contradicts the last headline.

Did you ever stop to wonder if these headlines are true? Just because it appears on the front page of a news article or you heard it from your physician does not mean it is true or accurate.

"Studies show...."

Do you know the difference between good studies and bad studies? Many of the so-called 'studies' we read about have absolutely no basis in fact.

What you need to know is that there is a huge discrepancy in how studies are conducted and what the data means; how the message is interpreted, and how that message is delivered to you.

When I was in nursing school at a major medical and research university, I was told that only a very small percentage of scientific studies (less than 10%) actually made it to mainstream media and were published.

And of the ones we do hear about? Many of those are flat out wrong, misinterpreted, biased or totally skewed.

How does this happen? It's science, after all...

Top Anti-Aging Foods for Beautiful Skin

By: Al Sears, MD

Dear Health-Conscious Reader,

Today, I'll share three of my favorite anti-aging foods with you that are also great for your skin.

Adding these foods to your diet is a helpful first step to getting the anti-aging nutrients you need to look good, feel good and keep moving into your 80s, 90s and beyond.

Anti-Aging Food #1: Blueberries

These little berries are best known as an antioxidant powerhouse. In fact, they have more antioxidants than almost any other food. And that's important to your skin, because your body uses antioxidants to fight the free-radical damage that makes you look older, faster.

The antioxidants in blueberries also help your body manufacture collagen and keep your skin supple and smooth. Blueberries also are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin E, riboflavin and fiber.

But blueberries can help you in other ways, too, by:
  • Reducing blood pressure and cholesterol. I just read a study that showed how subjects given a blueberry drink saw oxidized LDL cholesterol (the form that clogs arteries) in their blood drop by 28 percent. Their blood pressure went down by 6 percent, too.(1)
  • Sharpening your vision. Recent studies show that chemicals in blueberries - called anthocyanins - have a positive effect on your vision (visual pigments) and the overall health of your eyes. The researchers also found that other chemicals in blueberries help your body combat free-radical damage to retinal cells.(2)
  • Keeping your mental edge. After just 12 weeks of drinking blueberry juice, people in one study with mild memory problems showed improved memory and thinking skills. Even their moods got better.(3)
That's quite an anti-aging boost from a tiny berry. But my next selection gets down to the very roots of aging...

serranoDr. Eric Serrano MD, MS, BC
Eric Seranno
Hello Dr. Serrano,

Seven years ago through a nutritionist I found out my stomach does not produce enough acids to break down the food I eat prior to it entering my intestinal track. This was causing IBS problems.  I now take digestive supplements with meals to offset this deficiency which has worked wonderfully. These supplements include a hydrochloric acid tablet made from beets and a pancreatic enzyme tablet.  I also will occasionally take probiotics as I see the need. The healthy bacteria in my system seem to fall off over a period of time and they occasionally need a boost.

My question is what organs or body functions are supposed to create these digestive enzymes in my body to begin with? This seems to be the root cause of my problems and what might be the steps to help my body or the organs in question produce what it should to begin with.
Wildwood, MO

Dear RP,

This is a very good question and also hard to answer without more details but I will do my best.

The three main organs producing digestive enzymes or juices are:

1. Stomach - Produces acid
2. Pancreas - Produces many, including pepsinogen
3. Liver - Produces the bile to digest fats by storing it in the gall bladder

I can add the mouth to this list because the salivary glands do produce some type of digestive material but that will be too technical. Now back to your question: why are you having this IBS?

It could be because you have food allergies, or you are not giving the body enough protein or raw materials for it to produce the enzymes. Or, you don't have the right bacteria to help your body handle what you are eating.

There are four supplements that I take everyday:

- Alpha Omega 3: I take four tablets twice a day, with two meals, and this gives me a combination of Omega 9, Omega 6, and Omega 3

- Pancreatic Enzymes

- Multivitamin from a food concentrate

- Probiotics.

The Alpha Omega 3 I created myself and you can get it from Scott at (614) 596-7994. The enzymes are prescription, but I also recommend the enzymes from Innate Response, and their vitamins are called Multi Food which I like a lot and take myself. By calling (800) 634 6342 and using code SER030 you can get them cheaper. You can also get probiotics from them called Flora 20/14.

I hope this help you and make sure you make changes in your diet so your digestive system is well supported.

Thank You,

Dr. Serrano

Not Ready for Shirt off Weather?  Get There with The Extreme Crash Diet

By: Scott Mendelson

Memorial Day is going to be a reality check because there is no way I can take my shirt off at the pool.  I have too much body fat to lose to feel comfortable and while my wife will not admit it she is in the same boat.  We host a big party July 4 and we both want to be looking good while also having higher energy levels.

I have been flooded with emails since the weather started to improve at the beginning of May from new clients wanting to get ready for summer and this year I have put many new rapid fat loss tactics in place with great success.  A focused, yet simple approach can melt body fat quickly using a combination of proper nutrition protocols, interval cardio plans and metabolic weight training.

Customized routines provide the fastest path to success ensuring that all of your hard work pays off ASAP.  Anyone looking to make significant progress must embrace change, if existing methods were working well there would be no problems!  Eating "clean" and starting a general exercise routine are steps in the right direction, but not enough to create the rapid progress necessary to make this a great summer!  Work hard and smart!

Time is of the Essence - Eliminate Bloating for a Leaner Physique Today!

With July 4 being so close I am not going to promise you massive body fat loss in only a week, however you can drastically change your appearance to look much leaner by eliminating bloating, water retention and other factors which make people appear to have a higher body fat level.  Nothing attractive about a bloated gut at the pool!  The Extreme Crash Diet appropriately named by Dr. Serrano is designed for short term (4-8 weeks) of use to earn exactly the results you are looking for.  Elimination of common food allergens and irritants causing bloating will put you on a fast track to success in several ways.  Fat loss moves quickly with the ECD producing great changes in a month or less.  The most attractive features include high energy levels, no difficulties with hunger and minimal preparation time and tracking.  Ask Scott for your copy today!

Fat Loss vs. Weight Loss

One of the first questions I get during email or phone inquiries is how many pounds can I lose?  This depends on many factors, but I quickly change the focus to loss of body fat vs. weight...

Hi Folks,
Sunny Acres Raw Honey
I just placed another order with you guys. I keep placing orders because our whole family is so pleased with your products. Since I've already bragged about your meats, allow me to mention another item you sell that is delicious. I love honey so I've enjoyed eating your Sunny Acres Raw Honey for a while now, but a couple of weeks ago my husband, who "doesn't like honey," decided to try it. He's now hooked on the stuff so I'm ordering more. Thanks so much for offering us such wonderful stuff. :-)

Happy customer,
