Is Your Fat Burning Hormone On?

October 30, 2011
 Monticello, Missouri
Dear John,
 Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween!  Hopefully everyone is having an exciting Halloween weekend and gearing up for trick-or-treaters on Monday.  We have plenty of safe Halloween treats - our award-winning dark chocolate is to-die-for and processed locally from bean to bar, we think it is one of the best kept secrets in Missouri!

It is hard to believe October is coming to an end, which means we must start gearing up for holiday season!  We added more Thanksgiving Free Range Turkeys this week!  More sizes are expected to be ready next week and will be added to the store just as soon as they are available.  These turkeys ship frozen from our free-range poultry farm on Tuesdays only.  We encourage orders to be placed early for best selection and to allow for ample thawing time.  If you have questions about thawing, cooking and carving, be sure to check out our special Turkey Tips and Tricks blog page!

According to a new study by the University of Bristol, research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce the symptoms of osteoporosis, exciting news for the millions of people who suffer from this debilitating disease.  This research goes back to the fact that the modern diet is overloaded with inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids, with too few omega-3's, the anti-inflammatory fatty acids.  One of the best sources of omega-3's is fish oil, which may actually be able to slow or prevent the onset of osteoporosis.  More great sources are wild-caught salmon and grass-fed beef, lamb and bison.

Another exciting new product landed in our store this week - Tender Grassfed Barbecue is a cookbook hot off the press by one of our favorite authors, Stan Fishman.  His first cookbook, Tender Grassfed Meat has helped all of us perfect our favorite grass-fed recipes.  By testing each and every recipe in both cookbooks, Stan has the perfect cooking times and temperatures for your favorite cuts.  These cookbooks will make great holiday gifts for any chef, and will be especially helpful for those new to cooking grass-fed products.

Here at US Wellness we are still enjoying our most recent copy of Paleo Magazine.  We have found this magazine to be a dependable resource for so many of our projects.  Whether you are looking for healthy lunchbox ideas, info on the current vaccination debates or how to throw the perfect paleo Halloween, this is your one stop shop.  If you have not subscribed yet, you are missing out.  Visit their website to get signed up, and check out their amazing recipe section while you are there!

Do you know the secret to burning fat and still eating what you want?  No, it's not a magic pill or powder.  Read Kelly's article below for some fat burning tips to get the lean, healthy figure you want!

Weston A. Price Conference

We are looking forward to attending the 12th Annual Wise Traditions Conference, hosted by the Weston A. Price Foundation.  Every year they bring in some of the best chefs, bloggers, speakers, and vendors all specializing in healing, nutrient-dense foods based around the works of Dr. Weston A. Price.  If you will be in the Dallas area November 11-13 be sure to stop by the Sheraton Dallas Hotel for what is sure to be an educational experience.

The conference kicks off Thursday night with a traditional Texas country-style dinner and music along with an organ meat cook-off, with plenty of other festivities and events going on.  Then Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are packed with speakers and sessions all day long, with so many different topics covered there will be something for everyone.

Our favorite part of the conference every year?  The food!  Their menus are hand-picked with some of the best local and traditional foods.  We will also have a booth there with plenty of grass-fed samples to try!

For more information visit the conference website.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Einstein's Secret...

By: Al Sears, MD

Dear Health-Conscious Reader,

Albert Einstein had only one thing different about his brain than the brain of everyday folks. I'm going to tell you what that is, and it has to do with the most common thing people worry about as they grow older.

In my experience with anti-aging medicine over the last 25 years, there have been plenty of things my patients worry about: looks, vision, strength, sexual potency, and so on.

But the hands down, number-one thing more people are concerned with over and above anything else is the decline of their brains.

The fogginess. Their loss of memory. The experience they've had with elders who can't remember things. The struggle they're having trying to keep the same level of mental energy and focus.

They feel mentally fatigued, and that bothers them more than any physical problem. And from what I've seen, as you get older, you're very aware of it and desirous of something to help with memory, attention, motivation and mental focus.

So, what to do? How can you repair your aging brain, and get better as you get older?

One way is to give some extra support to a neglected part of the brain called the "glia."

Brain researchers always thought of glial cells as neurons' strange assistants. They believed neurons did all the signaling and all the "thinking."

But new research shows that glial cells do a lot more than just take up half the space in your "gray matter."

Turn on Your Body's #1 Fat-Burning Hormone

By: Kelley Herring

This may come as a surprise, but burning body fat and sculpting a lean, healthy physique is not about eating less food. It's about eating the right kinds of foods.

In my recent article, Are You Following a Low Glycemic Diet, I showed you how high-glycemic foods promote weight gain by stimulating the "fat-storage hormone," insulin. But keeping your blood sugar stable with foods that have a low glycemic impact is only half of the fat loss equation.

The other half of the equation involves the "fat-burning hormone," glucagon. By understanding the interplay between these two important hormones and how they are affected by the foods you eat, you can truly win the battle of the bulge.

Insulin and Glucagon: Your Hormonal See-Saw

The hormones insulin and glucagon are both produced in the pancreas, but that's where their similarities end. In fact, these hormones are antagonistic or inversely paired. Just like a see-saw, when one goes up, the other goes down and when one goes down, the other goes up. These two hormones also serve opposite functions.

  • Insulin is a fat-storage and blocking hormone - The job of insulin is to lower your blood sugar by shuttling glucose into the muscles and liver as a source of energy. When glucose is present in your bloodstream, insulin blocks access to your body's fat reserves. After all, why burn fat, when you have sugar around? Insulin also causes the body to store excess glucose as fat.
  • Glucagon is a fat-burning and unlocking hormone - Glucagon can actually raise your blood sugar by converting glycerol in your fat cells into glucose for fuel. Glucagon also signals the fat cells to release free fatty acids (a process called lipolysis). Glucagon signals the body to release stored fat to be used as fuel.

Numerous research studies illustrate the effects of these two opposing hormones. The simplest of these was featured in the Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology. In the study, researchers injected one group of rats with insulin and another group of rats with glucagon.

The rats that received the insulin gained body fat and ate more. The rats that received the glucagon lost body fat...

Dr. Serrano,

I am a vegetarian and have finally decided to start incorporating some meat products into my diet.  I do eat fish already, but what meat products do you recommend starting with to ease this transition?

Thanks so much,
Revee S.
______________________________________________________

Dear Revee,

I love this question because you are coming back from the forces of the dark side, welcome to the meat eating world.

If I were you I would start with what you crave the most, or with the one that will be the easier for you to accept and eat.  Start with low fat meats and with only one type within a 24-hour period that way you will know if it is okay for you or not.

I also recommend not to cook the meat to a black color so it is easier to digest, but let your preferences take over the cooking method.

Good Luck,

Dr. Serrano

Lose 10-20 Lbs of Body Fat in 4-8 Weeks with Rapid Weight Training Workouts

By: Scott Mendelson

Scott,

Everywhere I look on the internet and elsewhere suggests long workouts to burn fat and get in shape.  After using these types of plans that are lasting an hour or more several times per week I am burned out after a couple weeks and feel like I am getting even fatter.  How is this possible?  My husband and I want to lose 10 to 20 lbs of body fat quickly while making our arms look better?  What do you suggest?

Jane

Jane,

Yes, it is possible to gain body fat while working hard if the nutrition and training plan are not correctly set up.  A large percentage of the heavily advertised routines on the market show nice pictures of models doing workouts, but do not discuss the appropriateness of the routine for specific people.  I do not believe in one-size-fits-all as it relates to training, but we are able to come to some solid conclusions for the masses that hold true.  The types of workouts that you describe can cause over-training which creates a hormonal mess that wastes muscle and increases body fat levels.  An added negative is the high risk of injury with certain routines involving complex exercises executed in a fashion to drive fatigue.

Elevated Cortisol Levels Drive Mid-Section Fat Storage for Men and in the Lower Body for Women

The concept of making people think they will work extremely hard and automatically earn results is nothing new. Unfortunately this playbook just does not work and can cause your progress to move in the wrong direction.  The body responds to excessive exercise by increasing stress hormones such as cortisol which drives mid-section fat storage for men and lower body fat accumulation for women.  You must take into account your training capacity which is impacted by stress levels, age, nutrition, sleep quality, training experience and more.  Exceed your capacity to recover and you will be in trouble fast!  Ask for the Belly Fat Slashing Special Report to learn more about conquering these fat storing trends.

Training Quality Beats Quantity Every Time!

I am a firm believer in focusing on quality over quantity based on years of experience helping clients earn great results with a conservative amount of training volume.  Do not get me wrong, I am a big believer in working hard, but working hard and smart based on your needs is important for the big picture.  The training habits of many new clients that come my way and the population at large are very poor.  At times there is little structure, a lack of intensity, and no specific plan to earn results.  Without a specific plan for your needs you are just exercising and not training.  The difference - exercising is going through the motions - sure you will break a sweat and feel like you accomplished something, but that leaves much on the table...

 Beef Brisket
Dear Grassland Family,

I cooked one of the briskets I received yesterday for 15 hours slow-low cooking for shredded beef. WOW! It is delicious!!!

I also added onions and ended up with a very nice thick sauce that I saved. I am glad I bought four briskets!

I am getting a delivery of Hatch chilis this weekend to serve with the shredded beef, I am excited! Thank you for such a great quality meat.

Sincerely,
A.L.
