How to Sneak Liver Into Your Diet!

May 13, 2012
 Monticello, Missouri
Dear John,
Farm Photos
Happy Mother's Day! Hopefully all of the Mothers reading today are enjoying a healthy and relaxing day.

We would like to thank everyone who stopped by to comment on our Mother's Day blog.  Special congratulations to US Wellness reader Jean S., who was the lucky winner of our Mother's Day gift package.  Be sure to subscribe to our blog so you don't miss out on any of our easy giveaways!

Our feature sale item this week is one of our most unique products.   Good, clean Liverwurst is hard to find in stores, as it usually contains the typical list of fillers and preservatives.  Not here!  Our Beef Liverwurst is made with 100% grass-fed ground beef, liver, heart and kidney.  We throw in an assortment of healthy spices and the end product is a tasty and clean Liverwurst!  We have had many customers tell us it reminds them of what their grandparents made them as children.  Not only is it tasty, but healthy!  Liver is chock-full of nutrients and an essential part of any diet.  Unfortunately, the strong taste and "tang" of liver that many people dislike keeps it missing from diets.  Luckily, our liver is cleverly combined within the Liverwurst and has a smooth taste.  Try some today while it is on sale!

What makes liver so healthy?
  • Vitamin A
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Protein
  • All B-Vitamins

For more information on this nutrient-dense cut, visit the Weston A. Price website.  There are plenty of ways to incorporate liver into your family's diet, besides Liverwurst we offer Beef Braunschweiger and Chicken Braunschweiger.

Another reason to make sure you are getting enough liver in your diet is that it is one of the best sources of Vitamin B12, which is a nutrient many people are severely deficient of.  This short quiz shows you how to identify a B12 deficiency and what to do about it.  Vitamin B12 is most prevalent in animal foods, such as meat, seafood, eggs and dairy products.

We are looking for a winner!  Fitness in Evolutionary Design recently held a huge Primal Giveaway and they have yet to contact the lucky winner - Juliette C.   If you are out there please drop us an email so you can receive your prize!

Looking for a good summer read?  We're hooked on Nell Stephenson's Paleoista, a must-read for those looking to incorporate the paleo lifestyle into their busy modern lives.  For more information, visit the Paleoista blog

Warm Regards,

John, Lee Ann, Tressa, Jennifer, Amanda and Laura on behalf of the farm families of US Wellness Meats.

The Easy Way to Drop Fat

By: Al Sears, MD

Dear Health-Conscious Reader,

What if the central point of the entire weight-loss industry were all wrong?

Trainers and weight "specialists" tell you the only way to drop weight is to consume fewer calories or to melt more calories.

But they made a mistake. It isn't. Because they left out the most important thing: what your body does with the calories.

And your body can decide to do other things with the calories besides building fat. It's a decision your body makes depending on the environment you put it in.

And you can control the environment you put it in. One of the biggest ways is with two small words.

More protein.

Protein gives you the feeling that you're full, more so than carbs or fat. Protein boosts your sensitivity to a hormone called leptin. This hormone tells your brain that you're full. As a result, you feel satisfied. Overeating stops.

Protein is important for both losing weight and gaining muscle. A very revealing study makes a point I always try to get across to my patients: People who increased their protein intake, shed fat and gained muscle.

In fact, the people who ate a high-protein diet dropped seven pounds in six weeks. The group who followed a standard diet didn't drop any weight. And, the high-protein group simultaneously gained twice as much muscle.

Also, getting enough protein tells your body that times are good, and flips your metabolic switch from "store fat" to "melt fat." Then your body will use the calories as essential fuel to function at its best...

Alzheimer's: Just Another Form of Diabetes?

By: Kelley Herring

A recent article about Alzheimer's in a major health publication stated that "Age is the biggest risk factor for the disease." The author was referring to the fact that the prevalence of Alzheimer's doubles every five years in people over 65.

The same is true for most chronic diseases (including macular degeneration, cancer, heart disease and others). Their prevalence increases as we grow older. But this is merely a correlation. Age itself is not the "cause" of these diseases.

Degenerative diseases have very little to do with chronological aging. Instead, they are the long-term ramification of unhealthy choices. It is the end result of chronic stress, poor nutrition and toxic overload that occurs over a long period of time.

But here's the good news: There is a lot you can do right now to protect health (and your memory) tomorrow. And the first step to protecting your memory into your golden years is to dramatically reduce your sugar intake.

Type 3 Diabetes: The Blood Sugar Connection to Alzheimer's

Did you know that insulin isn't just produced in the pancreas... but also in the brain?

It's true. And just as the cells of the pancreas wear out over time due to excess levels of sugar in the diet, it can also cause brain cells to deteriorate insulin receptors there to malfunction. This can lead to those embarrassing "senior moments"... and potentially Alzheimer's.

In fact, researchers from Brown Medical School are now calling Alzheimer's "Type 3 Diabetes" and link the disease to impaired blood sugar metabolism. When these researchers looked at the brain tissue of 45 Alzheimer's patients, they found abnormal protein deposits that were similar to those found in the pancreases of diabetic patients.

It's no wonder that people with diabetes have a 65% increased risk of developing Alzheimer's!

Chemist Gives Three Toxic Reasons to End Water Fluoridation

By Shane "The People's Chemist" Ellison
All Rights Reserved (C)

Water fluoridation has been hailed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as "one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century," for its purported ability to prevent tooth decay. But, you can't believe everything the government tells you...Behind this glowing accolade lies a glaring scientific truth: fluoridation is one of the greatest public health threats of modern times.

It started in the early 1950's, and today, water fluoridation continues, with buckets of sodium fluoride, sodium fluorosilicate, and fluorosilicic acid (FSA) being dumped into our drinking water. By definition, it's forced medication, yet millions are unaware of the effects.

Historically, dentists have asserted that water fluoridation is safe. But they're starting to catch on to the truth. In an interview with fellow and past president of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology and author of Whole-Body Dentistry, Mark A. Breiner, DDS said that, "Adding fluoride to drinking water is a massive human experiment." I couldn't agree more. This experiment underscores three reasons why we should end water fluoridation now.

Reason #1: Fluoride Causes Joint Pain and Flourosis

Once ingested, fluoride compounds attack the structural integrity of our insides. Collagen, a web-like network connecting our skeletal system to muscles, is torn apart by fluoride. We feel it as joint stiffness, ligament damage, and aching bones. This same mechanism leads to browning of teeth, an outcome known as fluorosis. A whopping 23-30% of children living in areas with fluoridated drinking water suffer from these side effects.

Reason #2: Fluoride Can Cause Cancer

Cancer rates are at an all-time high. The best way to reverse the trend would be to highlight environmental cancer risks like consuming fluoridated water. As early as 1984, laboratory studies began showing how fluoride damaged the DNA of mammalian cells, giving rise to uncontrolled cell growth. This didn't stop the push to continue the mass fluoride medication experiment.

Physicians on the front lines of illness are seeing the side effects. When asked about water fluoridation, Dr. Gary Mezo, a Family Practice & Emergency PA-C/ARNP for 27 years told me that he is "against water fluoridation simply based on the multiple cancer risks associated with it, particularly bone cancer." Population studies show that those who drink fluoridated water are up to seven times more likely to suffer from bone cancer.

Reason #3: Ingesting Fluoride Doesn't Prevent Cavities (dental caries)

Fluoride in the water doesn't protect against cavities. I don't care if a million dentists believe this to be true, it simply isn't. Studies on fluoride ingestion prove it. It's pretty straightforward. Those who swallow fluoride, do not have less cavities than those who do not. In 2001, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made this information public, stating that, "The prevalence of dental caries in a population is not inversely related to the concentration of fluoride in enamel, and a higher concentration of enamel fluoride is not necessarily more efficacious in preventing dental caries."

To protect yourself from cavities, Dr. Andrew M. Goldsmith, DDS., told me via email that the main objective should not be fluoridation of water. Instead, he asserts that it "should be focused on education and thereby improving oral hygiene and decreasing the consumption of fermentable carbohydrates, for example sugar." In addition, add a xylitol based toothpaste to your daily brushing routine and you're sure to thwart cavities.

Water is perfect the way it is. Add any single ingredient to it and you screw it up. It's the only substance that can exist as a solid, liquid or gas at temperatures here on Earth. The two hydrogen atoms that share an affinity for oxygen cause the water molecule to be V-shaped. These unique properties allow it to give life to everything on the planet, all by itself. Any single impurity strips water of its molecular supremacy. Add a dash of salt to boiling water, it cools off. Toss a fistful of it on ice, it melts faster. Similarly, when we drink water laced with fluoride our biochemistry changes for the worst.

Will Your Body Pool Ready for Memorial Day?

Burn 10-20 lbs of Fat in 30 Days with A
Great Set of Arms!

By: Scott Mendelson

Scott,

I met one of your clients in the gym who is in great shape, he has the body everyone wants and he raves about your programs and he suggested I talk to you ASAP!  I want to build up my arms while losing body fat and not sure what to do. The goal is to drop ten pounds of flab in 30 days, but I need a simple nutrition plan to follow that I know will work - what do you suggest?

Jim L
Denver, CO

Jim,

I can help you achieve those goals in an aggressive time period to make sure your guns are ready to show off this summer.  You asked for a simple yet effective nutrition plan and the Zero Tolerance Fat Loss Plan is the ticket to 10-20 lbs of fat loss in 30 days.  I suggest an intense approach working towards short term goals which will require effort.  However, after reaching your fat loss goals with ZTP maintaining the low level of body fat will be much easier and allow for more freedom with the diet.  Otherwise the half-hearted approach that many people take just never gets them anywhere.

Talking Muscle Heads

99% of trainees keep the palm up when doing curls and the palms neutral when performing tricep exercises which neglect other heads of the muscle that must be stimulated for excellent development.  The routine below uses a strategic strip set to correct common weaknesses first, which pre-fatigues the muscles allowing for the stronger heads to also undergo excellent fiber stimulation. There is more to developmental balance that what one would think.

Weak muscle heads cause the nervous system to shut down growth of stronger heads to avoid injury.  The nervous system plays a huge role in both the strength and growth of muscles.  Kill the nerve within a muscle and it will die quickly no matter what nutrients you intake.  Building up weak muscle heads will allow the entire structure to grow like crazy!  Train as hard as you want but without balance you will not win the growth or strength game, while promoting major injury.  My clients who start out with the most imbalances see the fastest progress as the body responds very quickly to corrective work.  The longer and harder you have been training the greater the size of many strength deficits, allowing for a great opportunity for rapid improvements.  It is common for a client to put on ten pounds of muscle during a 12-week training phase just by focusing on neglected areas.

Advanced Trainees Must Use Near Constant Strategic Change to Stimulate Muscles

Trainees with ten or more years in the gym must execute routines with the finer details hammered out to keep progress going.  My advanced client programs have execution changes built in every 1-2 weeks to ensure growth and fat loss stimuli are fresh to the nervous system.  The harder you make the muscles work with fresh stimuli the more beneficial the stimulation of muscle fibers.  However, there must be a clear method to the madness as changes at random can be detrimental to progress...

Hey Guys,Pemmican

HUGE improvement with the new pemmican style.  Texture is just like it used to be a couple of years ago.  The round sticks are great, and my dogs already know the snapping sound of the casing being popped open.

Roasted Pork Sirloin

Roasted Pork Sirloin
&n bsp; Ingredients:

For the Sauce:

  • 1 granny smith apple, peeled, cored and diced into small cubes
  • 1/4 cup chicken stock/broth
  • 1/2 cup applesauce (no sugar added)
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tbsp white wine
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Directions:

  1. It will take a day or two to thaw this roast in the fridge, so be sure to pull it out of the freezer at least two days before needing it.
  2. Combine the salt, pepper, garlic, and herbs into a small bowl. The herb rub used on this roast is similar to my eye of round roast recipe, and for good reason: it works! This savory outside rub makes a crisp, salty outer shell around the roast which pairs beautifully with the honey/apple sauce we'll create later.
  3. Preheat your oven to 475 degrees. Rinse the roast and pat it dry with paper towels. Rub the roast with the herb mixture, and place the roast on a baking sheet that is lined with tin foil and a wire rack. Place the roast in the oven on a lower rack and cook for 30 minutes at 475 degrees, then reduce the heat to 350 and roast for another 60 minutes. Start checking it after 45 minutes with an instant-read thermometer. Once it's reached an internal temperature of 145, remove the roast from the oven, put it onto a cutting board, tent it with tin foil and let it rest for ten minutes.
  4. In a pan, add the chicken broth, applesauce, honey, white wine, black pepper, and cinnamon and heat on medium heat. Pour any of the roast's leftover drippings from the cooking sheet into the sauce as well. Simmer on medium heat for five minutes, allowing the honey to thicken the sauce as it reduces.
  5. Add the apple chunks and reduce the heat to low, and allow it to continue to simmer for a couple minutes as you prepare the roast.
  6. Remove the tin foil and carefully cut away the kitchen twine holding the roast together.
  7. Slice into thin slices and place them in a serving dish.
  8. As you plate the pork slices, pour some of the sauce over the slices. You don't need a ton of sauce, just enough to have a little with every bite. Enjoy!
