Favorite Snacks Restock!

November 25, 2012
 Monticello, Missouri
Dear John,
Farm Sunset
We hope everyone had a safe, relaxing and healthy Thanksgiving holiday!  We were able to enjoy a few days rest from the hectic pace November has been keeping us at, and are gearing up for the holiday season!

With the biggest shopping day of the year behind us, it has reminded us all that Christmas is right around the corner, and we are doing our best to make this holiday season as easy as possible.  More and more consumers are becoming very aware of where their food comes from and what ingredients might be hidden on product labels.   What better way to help your friends and family kick off a healthy new year than with a US Wellness gift certificate?  We can either email or mail them directly to you or the recipient, and this gives them an easy way to reach those New Year's health resolutions!

Here's your chance to win this week: simply check out our blog for a Weston A. Price Conference recap.  We would love your feedback on what foods you want to see at upcoming conferences and trade shows - just for leaving your comments you will be entered to win a special WAP inspired prize package.  Visit the blog for all the details!

We restocked several of our snack favorites this week: beef summer sausage, spicy jerky sticks, extra dry beef jerky, and our favorite sugar-free turkey jerky restocked last week.  Also back in stock is our best-selling shrimp prawns.  The last batch came from a different source, but we are happy to announce we are back to our original supplier for the 2-lb bags of wild-caught raw shrimp

If you or someone you know is taking a statin medication for cholesterol, you might want to read Dr. Al Sears' article below on how these medications may be adversely affecting your health, and what your options are.  According to the Weston A. Price Foundation, many prescription medications on the market today, especially statins, have severe side effects and often deplete our bodies of some necessary nutrients.  Their in-depth article discusses common side effects of some of the most popular drugs on the market today.   You may be shocked with some of these findings.

Dr. Sears discusses how to safely raise your HDL and lower your LDL levels without medication - much of this can be done by adding heart-healthy foods to your diet.  To help you stock up on omega-3 rich foods, and to kick off Cyber Monday a day early, be sure to use US Wellness promo code: HDL now through Tuesday, November 27th to save 15% off any order under 40 lbs!

Holiday Regards,

John, Lee Ann, Tressa, Jennifer, Amanda and Laura on behalf of the farm families of US Wellness Meats.

First Thing Is, Stop Taking Crestor

By: Al Sears, MD

Dear Health-Conscious Reader,

Of the four patients I saw yesterday four were on statin drugs.

All four new patients were taking a cholesterol-lowering drug. I've been saying for 15 years how terrible that is, and over that time it's gotten worse every year.

One of my new patients told me, "First my doctor put me on Lipitor and I got these aches in my legs so bad I complained until he took me off. The only way I got him to take me off was telling him I wouldn't take it anymore. So then he put me on Crestor.

"Since then, I'm worse. Now I have pains in my legs, my back hurts...even my neck is stiff. Every day I wake up and I can hardly more. So I told my doctor and he said, 'You can't stop. Not only that but we want your LDL cholesterol down to below 70 and yours is 130 so you're going to have to take more of the statin."

That's when he decided enough was enough, and he came to me.

I told him, "The first thing I want you to do is stop taking Crestor."

"Well, I can start tapering..."

"No, don't taper it" I said. "Just stop it today. Stop it immediately."

He got so excited he had to get up and leave the room.

He went out and got his wife and they hugged each other!

Then she came and hugged me and they had a little celebration right there in my office. They were so happy they were elated because a doctor had told them he could finally stop the drug.

The cardiologist had done such browbeating on him...because most cardiologists are still recommending "statin drugs for everyone." It's like they've been locked in a cave.

My patient had told his cardiologist, "I read this stuff from this doctor who says you raise HDL with exercise - he's got a program where you can strengthen your heart - and you can do it with diet and supplements...

How to Feed Your "Forgotten Organ" for Better Health

By: Kelley Herring, Healing Gourmet

There is an organ that is as important to your health as your heart, liver and lungs. But you've probably never heard of it.

This "forgotten organ" plays a wide number of vital roles in your body. It synthesizes vitamins. It helps to regulate your hormones. It disarms carcinogens. It breaks down toxins. It even helps to kill invading pathogens.

And that's not nearly all. It also impacts the way your body extracts calories from food. It affects your mood. And it plays a vital role in training your immune system to prevent everything from colds and flu... to cancer.

The bad news is that most of us are assaulting this organ on a daily basis. We damage it with the foods we eat, the products we use, and sometimes with the medicines we take.

So, what is this mysterious organ?  It's your microflora!

What You Can't See Can Help You

Your microflora is also known as your microbiome. It is the collection of bacteria, viruses and fungi that live in your gut, on your skin, in your lungs, as well as in your mouth, your ears, and even your eyes.

According to Dr. Curtis Huttenhower, who leads the microbial research lab at Harvard, the average adult has around 100 trillion microbial cells that live in and on their body. This is more than ten times the number of human cells in the body!

But that's not all. These cells have about 100 times as many genes as you do. "So not only are we outnumbered," says Huttenhower. "We're outgunned." The bottom line is that the genetic material in your body is only about 1 percent human. The remaining 99 percent is microbial!

And these microbes are not just "hitching a ride." You have a symbiotic relationship with them. You give them a place to live. And they help to keep you alive.

Fetus Suffers When Mother Lacks Vitamin C

Maternal vitamin C deficiency during pregnancy can have serious consequences for the fetal brain. And once brain damage has occurred, it cannot be reversed by vitamin C supplements after birth. This is shown through new research at the University of Copenhagen just published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE.

Population studies show that between 10-20 per cent of all adults in the developed world suffer from vitamin C deficiency. Therefore, pregnant women should think twice about omitting the daily vitamin pill.

"Even marginal vitamin C deficiency in the mother stunts the fetal hippocampus, the important memory centre, by 10-15 per cent, preventing the brain from optimal development," says Professor Jens Lykkesfeldt. He heads the group of scientists that reached this conclusion by studying pregnant guinea pigs and their pups. Just like humans, guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C themselves, which is why they were chosen as the model.

"We used to think that the mother could protect the baby. Ordinarily there is a selective transport from mother to fetus of the substances the baby needs during pregnancy. However, it now appears that the transport is not sufficient in the case of vitamin C deficiency. Therefore it is extremely important to draw attention to this problem, which potentially can have serious consequences for the children affected," says Jens Lykkesfeldt.

Too late when damage is done

The new results sharpen the focus on the mother's lifestyle and nutritional status during pregnancy. The new study has also shown that the damage done to the fetal brain cannot be repaired, even if the baby is given vitamin C after birth. When the vitamin C deficient guinea pig pups were born, scientists divided them into two groups and gave one group vitamin C supplements. However, when the pups were two months old, which corresponds to teenage in humans, there was still no improvement in the group that had been given supplements. The scientists are now working to find out how early in the pregnancy vitamin C deficiency influences the development of fetal guinea pigs. Preliminary results show that the impact is already made early in the pregnancy, as the fetuses were examined in the second and third trimesters. Scientists hope in the long term to be able to use population studies to illuminate the problem in humans.

Vulnerable groups

There are some groups that may be particularly vulnerable of vitamin C deficiency: "People with low economic status who eat poorly - and perhaps also smoke - often suffer from vitamin C deficiency. Comparatively speaking, their children risk being born with a poorly developed memory potential. These children may encounter learning problems, and seen in a societal context, history repeats itself because these children find it more difficult to escape the environment into which they are born," says Jens Lykkesfeldt. He emphasizes that if pregnant women eat a varied diet, do not smoke, and for instance take a multi-vitamin tablet daily during pregnancy, there is no reason to fear vitamin C deficiency. "Because it takes so little to avoid vitamin C deficiency, it is my hope that both politicians and the authorities will become aware that this can be a potential problem," concludes Jens Lykkesfeldt.

Burn 10 lbs of Fat Fast During the Holidays by Getting Stronger!

By: Scott Mendelson

Scott,

When I stopped getting stronger my fat loss and improvements in definition also stopped.  After ten years of training, workouts are just not fun anymore.  When I lose interest in training the diet goes badly for me so this is terrible timing with the holidays here.  What can I do to burn off ten pounds of fat between now and the New Year without spending more than 45 minutes in the gym per session?

Phil

Phil,

You are exactly correct, even though gaining strength is not your primary goal, you must gradually increase the challenge the muscles face from week to week in order to burn more body fat!  At your experience level, the training routines must change every six weeks to prevent staleness.  The holiday season is full of bad food choices and you must have a plan to avoid looking like Santa!  The KISS Rapid Fat Loss Plan is the ticket to long term low body fat levels!

KISS Rapid Fat Loss Plan

Check out the highly effective, yet simple to follow, video explanation of the KISS Rapid Fat LOSS Meal Plan:  Part 1 and Part 2.  KISS involves simple to prepare meals full of organic protein, vegetables, good dietary fat sources and well-timed carbohydrate intake for rapid fat loss and high energy!  Eating "clean" is not enough to earn a low body fat level; there must be a strategy in place to force the body into burning fat fast through proper manipulation of macronutrients in addition to consuming the correct food sources.

I have reviewed your training records and spotted many problems, but it was very clear that there has not been much variety in your training techniques over the years.  We need to pack more work into a short period of time to increase fat burning hormones.  Strategically manipulating the loading and speed of reps will also stimulate the nervous system to be much more productive, allowing for you to get stronger each week!

Quality over Quantity!

Strip load training is perfect for you as it drives body fat loss fast, while fitting into 45 minutes or less, a few times per week...

  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika

  2. Meanwhile, chop up and saute the bacon until crispy. Reserve until ready to serve. Then, fry or scramble one egg for each person you plan on serving.

  3. Serve by scooping the chili in a bowl, top with the fried/scrambled egg, some crispy bacon & some avocado slices.
