Is Your Diet Toxic?
Farm Updates ~ Pemmican Restocks!

April 28, 2013
 Monticello, Missouri
Dear John,
flower
It's been a rainy few weeks here in Northeast Missouri.  After record rains last week, all of the creeks and rivers here, including the Mississippi, were out of their banks.  Luckily we had enough break in the rain to allow most of the water levels to decrease this week, so we are slowly getting back to normal.  The rain has been good for our pastures though, as seen in the recent farm photos below.  We finished out the week with sunny skies and are enjoying much warmer temperatures this weekend!

Besides having happy cattle, our grass-fed lambs have been enjoying the green pastures also!  Be sure to stop by the blog and check out our most recent post on our famous grass-fed lambs.  Raised on green pastures in Central Missouri, we are proud to be able to offer 100% grass-fed lamb products ranging from hard-to-find organ meats to the very popular ground lamb

We are excited to finally have a fresh batch of Extra Virgin Olive Oil in stock!  This unfiltered, cold-pressed oil is of highest quality and very versatile.  We source our olive oil from a diversified, fifth generation family farm in California's fertile Sacramento Valley.  Read Kelley Herring's article below for more information on your olive oil, and why it is so important to buy from a reputable source.

What is the first step to perfect health?  According to author Chris Kresser, you need to remove the toxins from your diet.  In this helpful post, he lists some of the most powerful toxins that are present in the Standard American Diet.  One of the biggest culprits is omega-6 oils.  What can you do?  For starters, you can increase your intake of omega-3's to help balance the ratio of omega-6:omega-3 fatty acids, as we do need both in healthy quantities.  Some of our favorite sources of omega-3's are:

Summer, and therefore swimsuit season, is right around the corner - are you ready?  Scott Mendelson offers some new workout tips in the athlete section below that will have your body beach-ready in only six weeks!  Rotating your training routine ensures that your metabolism stays high and helps keep fat burning levels high - read his article for all the details.  If you have any fitness questions or need some new exercise ideas for Scott please email us.

Don't forget about Mom!  Mother's Day is right around the corner (May 12), and we have all the ingredients to treat Mom to a healthy and happy Mother's Day.  Our decadent dark chocolate, grass-fed proteins and rich, wild-caught fish filets will have you on her good side all year long!  We can ship direct to any address in the United States.  Please contact us with any questions and stay tuned to our blog and Facebook for an upcoming Mother's Day special sale!

When is Acid a Good Thing?

By: Al Sears, MD

Antacids Mask the Symptoms of Heartburn, But Leave You Vulnerable to Dangerous Diseases

I've seen patients who eat Tums like candy. They claim relief from heartburn. Plus, they think the calcium in Tums would help keep their bones strong.

Unfortunately Tums are not a good source of calcium... and they're not a good solution for chronic heartburn either. In fact, taking over-the-counter antacids does you more harm than good.

These acid-blocking drugs can be harmful to your digestive system and your overall health.

When you take antacids on a regular basis, you create a low-acid environment in your stomach. Sure, it temporarily relieves your heartburn. But it opens the door to a whole host of problems.

Antacids Starve Your Body of Its Nutrients

Your stomach needs acid. And when you eat Tums like candy, you drive your acid to dangerously low levels.

Your body uses this acid to break down the food you eat. And it protects you from harmful fungal and bacterial overgrowth. Taking antacids can cause a domino effect that puts your health at risk.

Low stomach acid levels lead to a chronic condition known as hypochlorhydria. This happens when your body doesn't have enough stomach acid to digest your food and extract the nutrients.

Your stomach can't break down your food properly. In turn, your body can't absorb critical nutrients, vitamins and minerals. This includes essential-amino acids, B vitamins, and minerals like zinc. As you know, lack of good nutrition means trouble.

Is Your Olive Oil Contaminated?

By: Kelley Herring, Healing Gourmet

Olive oil has long been prized for the rich flavor it provides to a wide variety of foods - from meats and fish to vegetables and even baked goods. And in recent years, scientists have discovered that the benefits of olive oil go far beyond culinary.

Rich in monounsaturated fats and antioxidant nutrients called polyphenols, olive oil has been found to:
  • Increase levels of beneficial HDL cholesterol
  • Reduce bodyfat, specifically dangerous belly fat
  • Slash the risk of metabolic syndrome
  • Improve blood sugar balance and long term glycemic control
  • Boost satiety, benefiting weight loss efforts
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduce the risk of some forms of cancer
However, the unsettling fact is that the "olive oil" you're using may not contain olives at all...

Following a Western Style Diet May Lead to Greater Risk of Premature Death

Data from a new study of British adults suggest that adherence to a "Western-style" diet (fried and sweet food, processed and red meat, refined grains, and high-fat dairy products) reduces a person's likelihood of achieving older ages in good health and with higher functionality. Study results appear in the May issue of The American Journal of Medicine.

"The impact of diet on specific age-related diseases has been studied extensively, but few investigations have adopted a more holistic approach to determine the association of diet with overall health at older ages," says lead investigator Tasnime Akbaraly, PhD, Inserm, Montpellier, France. "We examined whether diet, assessed in midlife, using dietary patterns and adherence to the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), is associated with aging phenotypes, identified after a mean 16-year follow-up."

The AHEI is a validated index of diet quality, originally designed to provide dietary guidelines with the specific intention to combat major chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Investigators analyzed findings from the British Whitehall II cohort study, which suggest that following the AHEI can double the odds of reversing metabolic syndrome, a condition known to be a strong predictor of heart disease and mortality. The research team sought to identify dietary factors that can not only prevent premature death, but also promote ideal aging.

Researchers followed 3,775 men and 1,575 women from 1985-2009 with a mean age of 51 years from the Whitehall II study. Using a combination of hospital data, results of screenings conducted every five years, and registry data, investigators identified mortality and chronic diseases among participants. The outcomes at follow-up stage, classified into 5 categories were:
  1. Ideal aging, defined as free of chronic conditions and high performance in physical, mental, and cognitive functioning tests -- 4.0 percent
  2. Nonfatal cardiovascular event -- 12.7 percent
  3. Cardiovascular death -- 2.8 percent
  4. Noncardiovascular death -- 7.3 percent
  5. Normal aging -- 73.2 percent
The study determined that participants with low adherence to the AHEI increased their risk of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular death. Those who followed a "Western-type diet" consisting of fried and sweet food, processed food and red meat, refined grains, and high-fat dairy products lowered their chances for ideal aging.

"We showed that following specific dietary recommendations such as the one provided by the AHEI may be useful in reducing the risk of unhealthy aging, while avoidance of the 'Western-type foods' might actually improve the possibility of achieving older ages free of chronic diseases and remaining highly functional," notes Dr. Akbaraly. "A better understanding of the distinction between specific health behaviors that offer protection against diseases and those that move individuals towards ideal aging may facilitate improvements in public health prevention packages."
