about the Accidental Discovery that makes food healthier & tastier
Best late August regards,
Several cool nights in a row this past week have given the first hints of seasonal changes ahead. Purple martins have already left Lewis County two weeks early this year for their annual Fall migration.
Jumping into September we are reminded how important nutrition is for our immune systems. In honor of Vitamin D and Omega 3, we are highlighting the USW Seafood Category
to offer the perfect surf and turf choices.
Grass-fed beef has very a healthy omega 6 to 3 ratio of 2:1 which is even better than chicken. However, to really trump your omega 3 numbers, one weekly meal of salmon will boost omega 3 levels quickly. We have tested the Vital Choice sockeye salmon
, and it contained 6.16 parts omega 3 to 1 part omega 6! In short, once a week add salmon to your diet.
In short, it time to cast your line for USW wild caught seafood
In her article
, Kelley Herring provides several excellent tips to make your grass-fed meats tastier and healthier. The history of this unique discovery is as fascinating as the benefits we each receive every time we taste history.

MEN PLEASE AVOID THE CRASH DIETS
They are worse than you know.
By: Dr. Al Sears, MD
Most doctors will tell you to avoid unhealthy crash diets. It's not rocket science.
Desperate weight-loss tactics, such as skipping meals, extreme low-calorie diets or taking strenuous exercise with little fuel in your body, are perhaps the most useless ways of trying to get back into shape.
That's because if you repeatedly gain and lose weight you will end up with a slower metabolism, which makes it easier for your body to gain weight and harder to lose it in the future.
I see many victims of crash dieting in my wellness clinic - and in a minute I'm going to reveal a great Italian secret to losing weight that's worked wonders with my patients.
Few doctors, though, have any idea about the special danger these crash diets pose to men and their masculinity.

The Accidental Discovery:
that can add flavor & health benefits
By: Kelley Herring, Healing Gourmet
Many of the world's greatest culinary discoveries were made serendipitously. But very few were as impactful as the discovery of using spices to flavor and preserve food.
Anthropologists have shown that thousands of years ago, our hunter-gatherer ancestors would often wrap their kill in leaves and bark to preserve and transport the contents inside. Only later did they discover that this method of preservation could also improve the taste of their food.
And so the worlds' love affair with spices began...Continue Reading....

Green Tea Boosts Brain Power
Source: University of Basel
Green tea is said to have many putative positive effects on health. Now, researchers at the University of Basel are reporting first evidence that green tea extract enhances the cognitive functions, in particular the working memory. The Swiss findings suggest promising clinical implications for the treatment of cognitive impairments in psychiatric disorders such as dementia. The academic journal Psychopharmacology has published their results.
In the past the main ingredients of green tea have been thoroughly studied in cancer research. Recently, scientists have also been inquiring into the beverage's positive impact on the human brain. Different studies were able to link green tea to beneficial effects on the cognitive performance. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this cognitive enhancing effect of green tea remained unknown.

Salt & Pepper Pork Rinds
|A Great Snack!|
Great for travel, plus boys devour them at home.
New York, NY
Elizabeth from www.foodyourbodywillthankyoufor.com
Pastured pork comes from pigs that are raised in comfortable and healthy outdoor living conditions. Fresh air and sunshine, varied pastures, added nutrients from natural rooting/eating behaviors, and an absence of antibiotics or synthetic hormones (verify this with your supplier) allow the pork to be delicious and nutritious!
The Night Before:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together all ingredients for marinade.
- Cover pork chops with the marinade making sure to cover evenly.
- Soak for at least 4 hours, overnight works as well. (I like to flip them halfway through marinating)
When you are ready to cook:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- Remove pork chops from marinade, lightly shaking off excess liquid
- Sear all sides of pork chops (approx. 45 sec-lightly browned) in a seasoned cast iron pan.
- Transfer to a shallow baking dish.
- Cook pork chops for at least 20 minutes (thin chop) or up to 35 min if 1" or thicker
- Cover with foil and then cook another 5-10 minutes (until the thickest portion reaches at least 145-160 degrees)
