Dear John,

Ducks in flight over the Mississippi River flyway tell us the summer of 2015 is waving good bye.  The change in seasons is a powerful feature of our planet, and the instincts of our winged species paints a new mural every year following patterns created centuries ago.

The US Wellness Free Range Duck category has created a good bit of interest since inception three years ago.  Very limited choices nationally for GMO free, and free range raised Peking ducks.  You can choose between a whole duck on sale this week, or select boneless skin on breasts, duck wings, delicious duck fat, and nutrient rich duck broth.  For your pets the duck necks and ground duck backs are healthy raw choices.

Last week's Health article featured a recent study that discussed the powerful impact that a nutrient rich diet can have on our health.  The articles from Kelley Herring and Dr. Sears, continue that theme this week pointing out that the nutrients may even be more effective than popular medications.

In this week's article, Kelley reveals information on a study that shows that a dessert-like treat can help to control blood sugar levels better than diabetic medicines.  And if you would like to read more information about ways to manage blood sugar check out Kelley's article from our January newsletter.

Dr. Sears discusses a lesser known benefit of one of the nutrients he deems as a "primal" nutrient and says it can provide better results than popular drugs used for treatment today.  Remember to take advantage of the red letter discount code embedded within the Dr. Sears article

Check out Scott Mendelson's article. In it he shares some great techniques for improving that troublesome abdominal area.

"Primal" Nutrient Better Than Drugs For Depression

By: Dr. Al Sears, MD

I've been banging the table about the healing power of vitamin D3 for years.

This fat-soluble vitamin is one of the core "primal" nutrients that kept our ancestors strong, potent, and disease free.

In previous letters, I've shown you dozens of studies that back up this vitamin's power to fight cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, dementia and Alzheimer's disease.(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)

But vitamin D3 has a mental and emotional impact as well.

Treat Controls Blood Sugar
Better Than Diabetes Drugs

By: Kelley Herring, Healing Gourmet

More than 29 million Americans are currently diagnosed with diabetes, with an additional eight million un-diagnosed. To make matters worse, it's estimated that 86 million Americans have the symptoms of "pre-diabetes" and that close to half (40%) of the American population will develop diabetes during their lifetime!

But it's not just people with diabetes or pre-diabetes who should be concerned about blood sugar. Keeping your blood sugar within a healthy range is one of the most important things you can do to prevent heart disease, Alzheimer's, macular degeneration, weight gain, hormonal issues, certain cancers and more.

Strategies For A Great Six Pack

 By:  Scott Mendelson

Scott,

My body fat levels are much lower than most people I see at the beach this summer, but my ab muscles just do not "pop" very well.  Will I lose body fat faster by training my abs every morning?  My one weakness is cheating on my diet when stressful things come up at least once per week.

Tyler
Manhattan Beach, California

Tyler,

For my clients the keys to showing off a great six pack are low body fat levels and customized training routines designed to improve core muscle development.  Working your abdominal muscles daily will cause over-training and typically leads to back pain.  So, the answer is, "no" training your ab muscles every morning will not result in faster rates of localized body fat loss.  However the right nutrition improvements not only lower overall body fat levels, but can also reduce abdominal fat covering your abs very quickly.

Techniques Revealed...

As good, if not better, than those steakhouses ...

Filet Mignon
Filet Mignon with Herb-Butter & Mushrooms
Filet Mignon

We have great steakhouses in Denver, Shanahan's and Del Frisco's to name two.  I thawed this filet 24 hours and let it come to room temperature for an hour.  Used only salt and pepper and put it on the grill.  Seared one side at 450-500 for about 6 minutes, reduced the heat to about 350 and turned the filet.  Cooked another 7 minutes or so.  Checked internal temperature of the meat and pulled it off at about 140 degrees.  The minimal amount of fat on the filet was rendered off during cooking. Then let the filet rest for five minutes on a warm plate.  INCREDIBLE piece of meat.  I repeat, INCREDIBLE! As good, if not better, than those at the steakhouses.  Hard to mess this up if you bring the filet to room temperature and use just salt and pepper.

Roasted Sweet Potato, Poblano Breakfast Hash {Paleo, Grain Free}

Sweet Potato Poblano Breakfast Hash
Mmmmmm !!!!!!!

Author:  Caroline Potter, NTP

Serves:  3-4

Ingredients:
  • 1 large or 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1 poblano pepper (aka pasilla pepper)
  • 1 small or 1/2 large red onion
  • 3 tbsp duck fat/lard
  • 1 tsp Celtic sea salt, heaping full
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • fresh cracked black pepper, to taste
  • eggs, bacon and/or breakfast sausage to serve
Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Warm a large skillet to medium heat.
  3. Chop the potatoes, peppers, and onion into very small chunks.
  4. Working in batches, add a bit of the duck fat along with a portion of your chopped vegetables to the hot skillet.  Sear the vegetables for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally so that they get a nice outer crust but do not burn.
  5. Transfer to a baking sheet and repeat the process until all vegetables have been seared.
  6. Toss together with salt, garlic and pepper.
  7. Roast for 25-30 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are very tender.
  8. While the hash is finishing roasting, cook some bacon or breakfast sausage and fry up some eggs.
  9. Serve on a Warm Plate ... adding a scoop of roasted hash, topping with eggs and bacon or sausage.

Difficulty:  Easy
