It's that time of year! For those of us who love fresh garden veggies and fruits, the garden is beginning to produce. If you've been gardening for long, you know there's a difference between hybrid plants and heirloom. Plants grown from hybrid seeds have likely been developed for disease or pest resistance, or optimized for specific climates. They definitely have their attributes. Hybrids are created using controlled cross pollination. It's not the same as GMO. If you save seeds for next year's garden though, you won't know exactly what you're getting with hybrids if the seeds germinate. You may get any of a number of varieties used to produce the hybrid. Heirloom seeds, on the other hand, have not been altered. They retain the attributes they've had for generations. They also retain any issues, positive or negative, with disease, pest, and weather. Heirloom seeds will produce the same plant year after year.
When you're deciding on a variety, keep in mind what will work best in your environment. A quick check on your 'growing zone' will also help with planting times and variety choices. One thing is absolutely certain — a fresh, ripe tomato, cucumber, and onion out of the garden dresses up a grass-fed burger better than anything you'll find in the grocery store. Plus, you'll get the added benefit of the exercise, sunshine, and fresh air that went into raising it.
Many people throughout the world have been impacted by Covid. Some worse than others. Studies have shown that one effect has been an increased reliance on alcohol to get through stressful times. Unfortunately, while Covid cases have diminished, the lasting effects of alcoholism are still around. In this week's article, Kelley Herring shares some important information to help with this issue.
