Small Family Farms
Small family farms face significant hurdles in today’s agricultural landscape, especially those operating regenerative grass-fed cattle farms. One of the foremost challenges is the skyrocketing cost of land. Regenerative cattle farms require lots of land for animals to rotationally graze. As large-scale industrial farms expand and real estate developers push into rural areas, securing enough acreage for sustainable grazing becomes increasingly expensive. The battle against urban sprawl and the loss of farmland to commercial development further complicates the equation, threatening the longevity of these operations. When a farmer is able to purchase land to add to the grazing program, it can take years to rebuild the soil health.
Equipment costs also pose a steep financial barrier. Unlike conventional cattle farming, regenerative methods require specialized infrastructure for rotational grazing, water, and improved soil management tools, all of which require substantial upfront investments. Small farmers, often operating without corporate backing, must balance the need for modern efficiency with the reality of budget constraints. Farm machinery such as tractors and hay (grass) balers are extremely expensive and require frequent maintenance. New tractors with front end loaders can easily approach $100K.
Another critical challenge is the increased time required to bring grass-fed, grass-finished cattle to harvest. Unlike grain-fed cattle, which reach market weight in a relatively short period, grass-fed animals take at least twice as long to reach harvest weight due to their natural forage-based diet. This delay means a slower turnover of livestock and extended financial commitments before seeing returns. Managing these economic pressures while maintaining high-quality regenerative practices requires patience, comittment and resilience.
Lastly, the question of succession and the next generation of farmers looms large. The financial instability and hard physical labor required in regenerative cattle farming make it difficult to attract younger generations to continue the legacy. Many farm families struggle with succession planning as heirs often opt for careers offering more stability and less financial risk. US Wellness Meats is owned and managed by our farmers. John Wood and son, Johnny, are 5th and 6th generation farmers raising cattle the way our ancestors did. Thank you to all of our loyal patrons who continue to support our efforts even through challenging economic times.
All the Best, Team USWM
