Independence Day Celebrations
With America's 250th Birthday approaching in 2026 and the 4th of July just around the corner, it's fun to think about how our forefathers would have celebrated Independence Day. Some who lived at the turn of the 20th century would have had great grandparents who remembered the early days of the country. You may have seen the recent story of Harrison Tyler passing away last month. Harrison was the grandson of America's 10th president, John Tyler. That's hard to wrap your head around.
Independence Day celebrations in the early 20th century varied across different regions of the United States, reflecting local traditions, geography, and cultural influences. In New England, towns often emphasized historical reenactments and patriotic speeches, with communities gathering in town squares to hear readings of the Declaration of Independence. Fireworks displays were common, but many families also enjoyed quieter celebrations with picnics by the coast or lakes.
In the South, barbecues were a central part of the festivities, with large gatherings featuring slow-cooked meats and fresh produce. Rural communities often held horse races, shooting contests, and music performances, creating a lively and communal atmosphere. Fireworks were popular, but bonfires and torchlight parades were also common, adding a dramatic flair to the evening celebrations.
The Midwest embraced county fairs and large-scale parades, where farmers and townsfolk showcased their best livestock, produce, and homemade goods. Baseball games were a staple of the holiday, with local teams competing in spirited matches. Families gathered for outdoor feasts, enjoying grilled meats, corn on the cob, and fresh fruit from nearby farms.
Out West, particularly in California and Texas, celebrations often included rodeos, frontier-style cookouts, and elaborate fireworks displays. Cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles hosted grand parades, while smaller towns held community dances and storytelling events. The holiday was also an opportunity for immigrant communities to blend their traditions with American customs, creating a rich and diverse celebration.
Each region had its own unique way of marking the Fourth of July, but the common thread was a deep sense of patriotism, community, and appreciation for the freedoms that define the nation. It's time to stock up on meats for the grill. The Fourth of July will be here soon!
All the Best, Team USWM

Osteoporosis and Men: Are Your At Risk? By Dr. Sears
If you are a man aged 35 or older, you may not realize that you are just as vulnerable to osteoporosis as women…And that leaves millions of men underdiagnosed and undertreated. Recent research found that 28% of men between the ages of 35 and 50 had osteopenia, a precursor to osteoporosis — compared to 26% in women of the same age.
