Watching the Weather
Spring in the Midwest often arrives with equal parts promise and power. March and April often bring widespread storms across much of the region, reminding us that severe weather is part of life on the Plains. This year has been no different in that regard. While high winds, hail, and tornadoes can cause significant damage, these same systems deliver the rainfall essential for early plant growth. Spring moisture lays the groundwork for healthy pastures and crops, helping farms start the season on solid footing.
In recent years, summer rainfall has been inconsistent, placing greater importance on soil health and land management. On US Wellness farms, regenerative agriculture plays a critical role in building resilient soils that hold moisture and support long-term productivity. Farmers have long sought guidance on seasonal patterns from resources like The Old Farmer’s Almanac, first published in 1792. The Almanac has the distinction of being the longest running periodical in the U.S. While current predictions suggest a drier-than-normal spring, experience teaches that flexibility and preparation matter more than forecasts.
May will mark the start of gardening season in the Midwest, a time when many reconnect directly with the soil. Many gardeners are starting seedlings in the greenhouse or preparing their raised beds to receive new plants in early May. Working a garden requires patience, steady effort, and a careful balance of water and nutrients. Composting — whether from kitchen scraps or farm-based practices — adds valuable organic matter to the soil, much like the natural compost created when cattle graze and return nutrients to the ground. The payoff is considerable as it comes with the first bite of a homegrown tomato, cucumber, or ear of sweet corn, and the sense of satisfaction that follows.
As spring progresses, Mother’s Day is quickly approaching. Don’t wait too long to plan for this special Mother’s Day. If celebrating with a special meal is part of your tradition, thoughtful preparation can make the day even more meaningful. Whether she prefers a Standing Rib Roast, Filet Mignon, Pork Sirloin, Shrimp, or a Lamb Rib Roast, we offer a variety of high-quality selections to help honor Mom. Spring is a season of care, growth, and gratitude — and it’s often best expressed around the table.
All the Best, Team USWM
